In ancient fairy tales, cows, dogs and monkeys have the emotion as human do and they have a higher IQ than other animals.
In some Asian cultures, people don’t kill animals or eat the meat of animals, because in the eyes of the Higher Spirit, the Higher Spirit look us (Human beings) as animals too.
They’ve found that plants also “scream” when cut, it’s just not audible to us. Some cultures also believe plants are sentient, too. Gosh, don’t get to eat nothin’ without somethin’ suffering!
i dont really think theres any specific animals we shouldnt eat. In some places its normal to eat dogs and such. I think the rule for this is… an animal cant be a friend and food at the same time. If an animal is commonly a companion animal then we shoudlnt eat it. Like for example here in Canada we see it as ok to eat cows… but not horses. but in some countries they eat horses … and in some other countries they dont eat cows. so … its relative to a large degree.
Also some people have pigs as pets… and some people eat pigs…the rule i think is, if its a companion animal you cant eat it… its ok to eat a pig, but if its your pet and you love it etc and then slauter it thats messed up. cause you befriended it…
in canada many people use horses as companion animals so they think eating horses is wrong… so we have to choose…
is it a companion animal or not.
i do think we shouldnt really eat any meat unless we asbsolutely need to, but im hypocritical and eat meat for pleasure so i wont preach that
I eat meats, usually from animals (not human) chicken, turkey, fish, cow, lamb, pig, i also ate kangaroo, horse and shark once, in the wild when we were not farming we would eat what we could get, forage and scavenge anything we could for survival.
Very well put, @POET. I think you pretty much covered what I wanted to say.
So much of what we eat is cultural. While we may not understand other cultures’ practices, being respectful is very important, especially if you visit a place or household that does not uphold your own values but rather has different ones. I am an omnivore, so I do eat meat as well as vegetables and fruit, but of those you listed, @walterchang, I will only eat beef. Also, I do not think your thread is childish. You are just curious, and curiosity can be a very good thing. How will we learn about one another if we do not ask?
thanks
i think also scarcity might be an issue too. Some people have no choice. I saw one tribe in africa who traditionally eats primarily meat. i think they simply cannot grow crops in that region so they rely largely on herding. Heck if there was a famine here id probably eat a pigeon if i could
I’ve been thinking about cutting out all meat except for things like mussels and clams. Just eating things with extremely simple nervous systems. It’d be a ton of mercury but it’s the most ethical way I can think to eat without cutting out meat entirely.
Harming cats, dogs or horses/donkeys is so wrong to me that I don’t give a crap about how some culture may see it differently, it’s wrong. There is absolute truth, and with that comes absolute evil, and eating the meat of these animals is wrong.
Why you may ask, simply because they do more for humans than any other animals. To me, those animals are humanity friends.
