I dont think so. Even people I am emotionally open to still sometimes say things like “why don’t you try working” as if Ive never considered it.

Most of them don’t understand us but some try to understand but it’s rare in my experience.

I don’t think they know they are supposed too. I don’t think they know that we might want them too.

One thing that bothers me a lot is that my sister always says she’s just as mentally ill as I am only she copes with it better. She minimizes my symptoms and thinks her level of problems is the same as mine. She seems to think it’s only that I don’t try hard enough to deal with my issues that I have to take medication and she says things like “well if I would have gone the medication route…” or “if I would have played the disability card…” . It’s as if she thinks these are life choices I made as opposed to going to college and becoming a doctor. She doesn’t see it as something that has happened to me. I guess she doesn’t want to see me as weak. But to me it feels like she just doesn’t understand.

Some do some don’t. I’m thankful to have 2 friends that do and some family members as well.

Oh that would suck. I feel for you @Leaf . My sister is finally coming around to see my side of it. But my niece thinks mental illness is all a matter of attitude. In other words, if you believe you don’t have it, then you won’t have it.

At work, I would keep my schizophrenia diagnosis secret as many of my co-workers do not know what schizophrenia is. It’s better this way.
