Do all people with schizoaffective disorder BP type have to take mood stabilisers?

Or can the mood element/mania/depression be sorted with antipsychotics alone?

I am supposed to take one but I don’t. I have enough emotion blurting from the so. Don’t tell my pdoc

I’m schizoaffective and was taken off a mood stabilizer due to liver enzymes. This was a couple of years ago. My liver is fine now and nobody has tried to put me back on a mood stabilizer. I do fine without one. When I was first taken off depakote it was tough. I’m completely fine now though.

I just take Abilify and I’m fine

I think antipsychotics cause anhedonia in meet any blunting my emotions.

I have anhedonia. I don’t feel love for anyone

APs are prescribed more for mood disorders than they are for psychosis

Maybe you could, but I had one pdoc who was saying that no bipolar guy or girl could do it without a mood stabilizer. Me, I take Depakote, it helps me even for my anger or hysteria, or even the anxiety.

No, I don’t need any mood stabilizers. My mood is very even and stable without them. I take three AP’s though. It feels like I have no emotions.

Not everyone needs a mood stabilizer. Invega is an example of a drug that can be taken without a mood stabilizer and is approved to treat schizoaffective disorder. I take lamictal which can act as a mood stabilizer but I primarily take it for seizures.

I’m on haldol but that is it. I don’t take a mood stabilizer.

It depends.
Because I lean heavily towards the bipolar side of the spectrum, I need to be on a mood stabilizer.
Not everyone diagnosed with SZA needs to be on a mood stabilizer.

I’m on abilify and I think it’s not working well because of the mood stabilizer attributes. I don’t have any bi polar or effective traits

Yes, Abilify made me intensely paranoid and psychotic. It was like not being on anything at all.

Yep that’s it. Thank you for relaying this. I’m not myself at all. it’s like psychosis without the positives.

Nope. Not everyone.

I take two AP’S - amisulpride and olanzapine. The olanzapine is supposed to be a mood stabiliser and help with depression.

I used to take 4 meds: buspar (anxiety), prozac (Depression), lamictal (mood stabilizer), and abilify (antipsychotic) for about a decade, but then after going on private health insurance, I couldn’t get a pdoc for a long time, so I was without meds for about a year or more.
Finally saw a pdoc in August and she didn’t put me back on lamictal or buspar, and I’m okay with that. I’m doing good and I think the less meds I have to be on, the better for my kidneys and alertness.
I think abilify does have some antidepressive quality in it, but at least I don’t have to take the lamictal, which just got an FDA warning on it for inflamming the autoimmune system and can be very dangerous in some people.
Here’s the lamictal link, if you’re curious:
