Did anyone else have their schizophrenia onset during childhood?

And if you did, how old were you? For the record I would define childhood as younger than sixteen, because sixteen is the average age of onset for a lot of people.

I’m an odd case. I had my first delusion of thinking people could hear my thoughts when I was eight. When I was nine I started thinking people were watching me all the time. Those two delusions were there all the time but it wasn’t until I was sixteen that I started having hallucinations in addition to delusions and got diagnosed. I find it interesting that there was such a long period between my delusions and hallucinations and that I started having symptoms so young. Not only is it very rare but I’m a woman and in women it’s even rarer to my understanding. I’ve heard that for women the age of onset is usually older than men. I wish that was the case for me.

I wish it had occurred to me that my delusions weren’t normal before I started hearing voices. I might have gotten treatment and never started hearing voices to begin with. It’s one of the worst mistakes I’ve ever made.

Enough about me. If it happened to you, how old were you?

Yea Mine Began at a Very Young Age

(EDIT)

And it Eventually Shifted into Schizoaffective “disorder”.

I exhibited a few signs here and there early on. But it wasn’t until I was 16 that I had my first full blown hardcore psychotic episode.

I think @Anna was very precocious in this regard.

Psychotic symptoms started for me when I was 15, though I was not diagnosed until several years later. I ended up being a weird, lonely outcast for a long time.

I had voices telling me I am the stupidiest person on earth since 15 y.o. I was ashamed of telling anybody. I told my family Dr when I was 18 but he ignored me. Suicide attempt at 20 y.o. ended up intoxicated and vomitting in the emergency, given antidote and sent to a psychiatrist who diagnosed me with psychosis. Sz after a month.

:raising_hand_woman: a person with early-onset psychotic depression here. I developed psychosis when I was 14, got diagnosed with schizophrenia at 17, and then re-diagnosed with psychotic depression at age 24.

At 20 y.o. it was my 3rd suicide attempt. At 18 y.o. I wanted to die so I drove my parents car to the maximum 200kmh in a snowstorm and then ice made my car flip twice, I broke the window and got out. Police said I am very lucky to not die, I lied to them and told them I was at 120kmh.

I consider myself very lucky to be alive now after 4 suicide attempts.

I had symptoms, paranoia, hallucinations and delusions, for as long as I can remember. Literally my first memories age 3 were of hallucinating like crazy.

I had my first major episode at 16. Probably had my prodromal phase around 12-13.

Started hearing voices at 12-13. They started off as rare and occasional. First psychotic break at 15 when I started hearing angels and attempted suicide to join them.

That was 20 years ago.

I’m a girl and I first started hallucinating at age five. I had vivid hallucinations of disks spinning around the room, and when I asked other people if they could see them they said they couldn’t… I had terrifying hallucinations every night until about the age of twelve, and then my symptoms disappeared for years. They came back later around age 24 but this time took a more paranoid approach. I felt like I was always being watched, everyone could see me and hear my thoughts, my hands were no longer in my control, the tv was harassing me constantly, that I had been micro chipped and had a camera inside of me etc… Now I’m on meds. Did you have a break like me also for a few years or was it consistent the entire time for you?

@PorkieMcPorkBean I’m really sorry you went through so much at such a young age. Your delusions you had (or have?) sound very similar to mine. My symptoms were consistent up until my diagnosis, I just went from just having delusions to having my first hallucinations. I don’t know if starting to hallucinate out of nowhere counts as a break or not, but I’d say it wasn’t because I wasn’t anymore paranoid or out of touch with reality then I had been since my symptoms started.

What meds are you on if you don’t mind me asking? I’m still trying to find a medication that helps with hearing voices. Has any medication done that for you?

I’m so sorry you’ve been through so much. I’m very happy you’re still with us. From what I’ve seen of you you seem like a very kind person. I hope things get better for you.

I’m so sorry it hit you so young. What age did you first get treatment?

They didn’t say nothing until one day they dragged me to the hospital but I think the writing was on the wall. They did testing when I was like 8 or 9 maybe then they came back in grade 9 but I was so ■■■■■■ up I didn’t even go. It was some psychosocial reforming project run by woodcock Johnson. They gave me a couple of new dictionary for participating. And the only other kid who was in the program was a really screwed up transgender kid who didn’t get along with anybody. He never made it to high school, he went to what was called bridges here in ontario, that’s like a school for messed up kids and by that I dont mean handicapped. So ya. Diagnosed at 15,16ish

I remember some serious ocd behavior in first grade. I was in fear and had to go up and down on pieces of playground equipment a certain set way. I was a talkative child though and I think that helped me get through…and I had a great emotionally rich home life.

My parents were anti mental health field when I grew up so I was not able to get help for myself until I was 18.

My mental illness started at 13 years of age with severe anxiety and panic attacks.

Started hearing voices around 15 years or so

Mood swings started around 16

Full blown sza started at 18.
