Damn Doctor

My girlfriend has some issues with her illness but she works and goes to school. She’s very high functioning. Lately she’s had some audio hallucinations creeping in and it’s bothered her.

So what does her moron doctor prescribe for her? Haldol. One of the god damn worst freaking drugs around. I can understand giving it to someone in an institution, or someone who doesn’t respond to anything else, but there are a ton of other meds they could try.

I am so worried that it’s going to do its zombie magic and ■■■■ up her work and school. They don’t call it the “Haldol Shuffle” for nothing.

I am majorly pissed off right now.

It doesn’t happen to everyone, or even the majority of the people on the drug, however. It’s mostly a term thrown around by anti-medication groups who don’t even understand what MI is like and how helpful medication can be.

She needs to change docs. Seriously. What’s next, recommending a partial lobotomy? That’s what Haldol is, a chemical lobotomy. You do NOT give that crap to a high-functioning SZ unless they are in a crisis state.

I’ve been around this system 30 years now, I’m familiar with Haldol.

I sure hope there is a way your girlfriend could be persuaded into getting a second opinion? Good luck and I hope your girl gets a better doc very soon.

I disagree with haldol is a chemical lobotomy. I’m currently on depot and have had numerous injections when put inpatient and I’m not lobotomized.

I do hope your girlfriend feels better soon but the idea that haldol is some horrible thing and we are all zombies on it is offensive. Yes, im largely treatment resident, but I’m not a ■■■■■■■ zombie and I’ve not been lobotomized.

Take care

@etre, apologies, but that’s how it affects me. I am unable to perform higher level work or even operate a vehicle when on the stuff. It also makes me cramp so badly I twist up like a pretzel.

Thank you for clarifying. I do understand and appreciate that we all react to medications differently.

It’s the only thing that works for me, in conjunction with other things, and I can’t say I’m high functioning, but I’m alive.

Apologies from me as well if I overreacted.

If it was not for the fact that Haldol is associated with a lot of movement disorders I would probably consider it at a very low dose - its an effective medication - great to quell down mania, it basically was a life saver for me at the Hospital got me out of a pretty severe mixed state episode. Haldol does not mess with your metabolism so much, like blood glucose levels

I didn’t say you were a zombie. I didn’t say everyone on Haldol was a zombie. If you are upset because I don’t think Haldol is the best drug to use in this situation then I’m afraid I can do nothing for you.

I didn’t hit the reply button to you and pixel already replied. I was more offended at the lobotomy comments. Sorry to have confused you on that by adding that I wished your girlfriend well and that you said zombie magic with respect to haldol.

I don’t appreciate the idea that medication dehumanizes but I am not asking for you to “do anything for me.” What could you possibly? That’s absurd

Edit: I realize that reading people give reasons why medication I’m supposed to take is horrible just feeds my thoughts about medications in an unhealthy way. It was a mistake to keep reading and a mistake to engage in reasons for not taking anything. I have problems with compliance and I need to avoid this sort of thing and this sort of line of thinking about medications. It won’t happen on your threads again.

I do wish you and your girlfriend well.

Take care

Maybe give it a week and see what happens? It may help as it does help some people.

Once again you read more into my comments than what I have written. I never wrote that medication dehumanizes. I wrote specifically about Haldol and the potential effect on my girlfriend.

And as for the absurdity of my doing anything for you, I could have apologized, I could have taken back my words, anything necessary to soothe your tremendous pain.

Agreed. I am one of the subset that had my white blood cells wiped out by clozapine. This is not a problem for the majority of users, but it damn near killed me. Pneumonia sucks.

I’ll be watching and she’s going to take note of how she feels. I hope this will help. I’m not suggesting to her to not take it but if it doesn’t work out well she’ll have to call the doctor and negotiate.

I agree with you totally. The years I was on Haldol were the worst years of my life. There is no reason the doctor couldn’t prescribe an atypical anti-psychotic for your girlfriend.

Have your girlfriend do a little research before talking to the doctor.
These days you get get 10 minutes no matter what’s wrong with you. And they jump to quick conclusions.

If she ever goes back to that doc, you have to take control. Otherwise they will try to control you.
Ask the doctor to explain the benefits and downsides of the current modern medications.
THEN say you will make a decision soon and you get to pick what you want.

If I was assigned a doc, I would quickly fire the controlling quacks as quick as I could.

How does your girlfriend feel about it?
What was she on before?**

it certainly zombiefied me. i couldn’t function on it at all if you want the truth. just laid in bed stinking, no housework, nothing. it was one of the crappiest meds i’ve tried to be honest. i thought seroquel was bad but haldo was the pits. next up? abilify and propanalol. i know it’s going to agitate me but propanalol come in higher doses now so maybe it will be ok. i wish your girlfrend all the best mal’. xxx
