So how do you cope with voices? Especially those that sound more like they’re in your head rather than external hallucinations. I mean I do try and listen to music but because I have “inner” voices that doesn’t always work for me. Is there a non-increase-in-medication way to get a better handle on this?
I just repeatedly remind myself that they are not real and have no power over me. Then I make myself busy with something else. I can now ignore them as background noise as a matter of habit.
I’m hoping they get to that, I’ve been trying to distract myself but some reason they’re unusually vocal tonight. They’re not threatening they’re more so making fun of me/teasing me…constantly.
I’m sorry they are doing that tonight. Downton Abbey is on PBS tonight.
I have more external sounding voices. When that happens I turn on the radio and put my head between the speakers.
Do you have art projects that you are working on? What are your hobbies?
I have a story I’m working on, but everytime I attempt to write something they start up again. I also have plenty of things for coloring but I’m not in the mood for it. The voices have calmed down some. I put on a noise simulator and it seemed to calm them down, have it on a bit of an eerie generator but I find it oddly relaxing. Tech. the site has free stuff but you get much more if offer a donation. https://mynoise.net/
I forget what I originally donated to the site, but it’s a one time donation unless you feel like offering more. they also have a iPod app…but I’ve been having issues with that one and stick to the site more.
Thanks for the link. I used to listen to an app called Relax Melodies on my Kindle. It was free on Christmas day. I guess I will get it out for the crackling fire sound that I like in the fall and winter.
I haven’t been doing any hobbies. I am using a vocabulary app to practice for the GRE. I am going back to school in the spring and I want to be ready.
Do you ever listen to music with headphones? Also, you can put one headphone in and leave the other one out. This helps me out a lot.
I purchased a cool little portable radio from Walmart for around 10 bucks, it came with headphones and is am/fm radio. I love it.
Was always the selling point of having a cat. Urban legend is they can see into the other realm. So if the cat wasn’t responding I knew it was all in my head.
My voices are usually racist and sometimes homophobic but they think they are funny so I say to myself that it was not funny and dismiss them and they seem to go away, meds help a lot, idk what I,d do without them.
I notice these come when I’m not using my mind actively. So I always have something to intently focus on most of the time.
I am also looking for a way to cope. I listen to music a lot. I sing along in my head. That makes them pretty quiet. Or atleast I don’t focus on them.
My psychologist told me to think about them as a radio. Listen, if not interesting, just leave them be and quit listening to them. Have not had any success with that yet.
Today was much better, I barely heard anything and was able to get some good work done on my novel, I have the first of three acts all planned out. Not only did I outline on the computer I put them on flash-cards and in a notebook, I think it helps having a handwritten copy of it, this way if anything happened to the computer I have the hand written outline to remind me of what I need to write.
I’ve been listening to more radio than watch TV today too and that seemed to help. Maybe I’ve been watching too much TV…I don’t know. But today was a good day for me, so I’m happy.
I’m happy it was a good day for you!
Usually listening to music and keeping myself distracted works. Especially when I socialize with other people and really focus on them, not my head.
the best way is quitting addictive substances. like seriously trying to get an addiction free mind on the go. or if you find your just struggling to much tell your doctor and show him with body language how much there frustrating you and he can determine with his own picture of the situation if you can handle a stronger / need a stronger dose. that’s my best advice authority figures supports in the community you have to show them with that awesome little thing we still have a bit of in todays society called honesty. use it to your advantage… you don’t have to be a rat… but you can paint an honest picture of your world for someone trusting whos there to listen… take advantage of it!
YouTube has some great relaxation, meditation and even ‘study’ type tracks that I have found help me with my inner voices and inserted thoughts. They also work to help with relaxation and good sleep if you use a sleep one. Best used with headphones although sometimes I put one on in the background when I am going to sleep.
