can contraceptive pills contributes to the onset of schizophrenia in women who are predisposed to schizophrenia?in 2009 my sister started to use contraceptive pills and several months after schizophrenia onset occured. It could be a link between the use of contraceptive pills and the onset of schizophrenia?
I haven’t heard it before. I don’t know
Most surely not
I’ve never heard of it, no idea.
But in my case (psychosis, not schizophrenia, or so they say), I feel there is a hormonal component. Pregancy, quitting breastfeeding, pms, contraception all influenced my symptoms. I have very often become psychotic or borderline psychotic 1 day before my period, there was clearly a hormonal pattern. There is actually such a thing as menstrual psychosis, where women become psychotic in connection to their menstrual cycle.
In my case, they put me on contraception to see if it prevented psychosis (I was not on AP meds at the time). I was all stable during contraception use and psychotic in my stop week.
Internet says some things about estrogen and progesteron & schizophrenia… no idea what hormones were in her contraception.
So there is some hormonal connection in some women, but no idea if contraception can trigger schizophrenia… I don’t think anyone really knows.
My symptoms got worse on the pill. I am switching to the copper IUD for this reason. I don’t think it could cause it, but it could definitely make things worse.
I’m going copper IUD when things are over. Sometimes I wonder about the estrogen and of course BC but also the mental problems. Definitely better without periods now, less up and down monthly.
