the psychiatrist asked me about cognitive decline and I replied,ā€œWell I recently became an octochamp on countdown which is better than average.ā€

I am not as sharp as I was, but I am still fighting my corner being diagnosed over 25 years ago.

To put it simply, does this mean the illness lowers your intelligence?

Unfortunately it does and can cause regression, by means of intellect and personality. Not everyone but it is super common. My aunt has it bad. Sheā€™s 58 but has a mindset of an 8-10 year old. Itā€™s really sad. For birthdays or holidays she buys toys or figurines for us (we are all 40 and older). She gets us things she wants so she can ask for them back. Of course we give them to her and she gets so excited.

@labratmat Totally agree I think this Journal needs to been taken WITH A LARGE PINCH OF SALT! Congrats on Countdown, I myself have what is known as a Photography Memory and can remember almost everything I read/listen too.Iam also a Sports/Rock Music Historian!

@labratmat Oh forgot to say Pysch think I have been Paranoid SZ since age of 15, diagnosied and Sectioned at 31, now 40 and run my own Ebay Uk Business and planning to go back to my OU Studies in 2020.

@Dizzy in my humble opinion NO!

My cognition has gone marked down these last couple of months

Letā€™s wait till it be replicated further. 65 people with schizophrenia is a small group also in this study they failed to answer whether or not it applies to everyone or is there some heterogenity.

Thanks for bumping this topic up.

I had an uneven cognitive profile indicative of a learning difficulty long before I came under psych services. Iā€™m not aware of any great cognitive decline, beyond what could be attributed to a normal, age related decline.

I do know that from 18-39 I didnā€™t use what intellect I had very much . At 39 I first got online , and began to use my intellect a lot more.

Itā€™s interesting research, but I do wonder how relevant it is to people here . Despite our problems the fact we can contribute here suggests we are doing comparatively well in cognitive terms compared to those people with psychosis who arenā€™t online.
