I had a telephone conversation with my mother and we discussed how Christmas was in the 1940s when she was a child. Then many people were poor and there was not enough money for Christmas meals. It was totally different from today when most children may get many gifts and have proper Christmas meals. But still today there are families especially during this coronavirus pandemic who need to go to food lines and food banks for having proper Christmas meals. But the times have changed.
During World War II, in the US there was rationing, and you had to have sufficient Ration Coupons to buy anything. Some people had the money, but didn’t have the Ration Coupons.
The same thing was in Finland during the 2nd WW. People got the Ration coupons to buy food and other necessities. Today things are much better. Today if people have not enough money to buy clothes at retail shops they can find good clothing at flea markets or other old item shops. In general the times are very much better today.
Back in the 1970’s when I was a teenager, inflation was really bad, and some people were having trouble making ends meet. Then there was a the oil embargo in 1973, if I remember correctly. Gas stations were closed and when open would only sell you a limited amount of gasoline. It was ten gallons I think.
This high inflation exists still today in some parts of the world, Lebanon, Venezuela I think. For example the situation in Venezuela is so bad that some people make their art works using Venezuelan currency because paper money has no value. There many people can not buy food and I am afraid that Christmas does not come to many families.
Well people here like to think times are tough, but at least there is free food being distributed by food pantries. I’m on government disability, so I’m not afraid of being evicted from my apartment. Others aren’t so lucky though. I think the Eviction Moratorium ran out and in September.
I have been watching some news from California and how shops such as restaurants are closed during this coronavirus pandemic. People have surely a different Christmas from many people have used to have. The coronavirus pandemic has changed so much how people are living. Even in Denmark there are tougher restrictions. I wish that Christmas comes to every family. Sometimes this coronavirus year 2020 reminds me of the 2nd WW.
