How can you tell they are ripe before you cut into them?
They should be orangeish in at least one spot and they should smell ripe at the stem hole.
Also, there’s something about knocking on them and seeing if they sound hollow, but that’s to see if it will be too watery, not for ripeness.

Okay I spammed this thread. I just have a lot of feelings over properly ripe cantaloupe and I DETEST when the ones in store are all green and people act like that’s normal. I only buy them direct from the farm now.
They’ll smell really sweet, too. Never buy one that has no smell. The stro nger the sme ll the riper it is.
I love love love this time of year when the honey rocks are available. So delish.
We haven’t had any cantaloupe at the stores in my area this year.

Haha I used to work produce at a grocery store. They are still green because they add a chemical to slow down the ripening. They do the same thing to bananas.
I dont mean to sound like I’m saying the chemical will kill you or anything, and I hate to come off as a fear monger. I just learned some creepy things working in produce. I always gag when I see people eating the fruits amd veggies in in store without washing them first. I’ve seen feces on the outside of watermelon before.
Smart move buying from the source, especially if it’s a trusted farm.
I don’t get the melon loving thing.
I’ve heard they’re ripe if you can hear the center when you shake the melon. I think it means the seeds are loose so then the melon is ripe.
you’re supposed to tap on them, I think, so I’ve heard.
