Calling all disability recipients I need your help

The state cut off my foodstamps at the begging of the year. They said I make too much money from disability. I got a $12 raise at the begging of the year for a annual cost of living increase. I get around $870 a month. I worked for 10 years before getting on disability so I had work credits which is why I get disability not ssi.

Anyone else get as much money as me and get food stamps?

I think the state is jerking me around on this stuff. They cut off my medicaid a while back and they said I didn’t qualify. I had to get my state representative involved to get my insurance back and it took me 6 months.

I’d appreciate any help you guys could offer.

I get around $700.00 a month ssi, and $143.00 in food stamps, so I am getting about as much spending power from the state as you are. I have worked very little, and I have no work credits. I would appeal to some higher authority if I were you. Public housing is a good way to cut rental expenses. They can’t charge more than a third of your paycheck for rent, and it probably would be lower for you.

What state are you in? Have you contacted the website for health and human resources? The website should tell you what your earning limit is? Remember the level of income is reset every couple of years, you could be back in compliance in January.

They just cut my food stamps down to $16 a month because of the money that I receive on disability. I get $855 a month and really was depending on the food stamps. I know how it feels. I have no advice for you, but feel your pain.

Don’t take it personally. The noise began back in March when the US Dept. of Agriculture told a Congressional committee that without additional funding, it would not be able to continue the federally supported but state-by-state-administered food stamp program at 2014-1025 levels. Congress has heard so many horror stories about the abuse of food stamps that it forced the USDA to development a new food stamp control program; one that most of you on food stamps have encountered at the check out counter for the past few weeks.

There are all kinds of wrinkles to this, but the bottom line seems to be that the political party that controls both houses of Congress right now has made promises to major campaign donors that they will Not Raise Taxes on the top 15% of the income brackets after tax rates were raised as part of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (from 35 to 39%). And that party gets a lot of heat from those people in a very direct way: “Take care of us and we will take care of you. Don’t take care of us and see what happens.”

What can we do. I dunno. Stop a rich person on the street and ask them to pay a little more on April 15th? Couldn’t hurt. Or you could vote for the candidate from the other party. Maybe some of you have better ideas.

Gawd, had no clue stamps paid out that little. Around here, income limit is $1100 and you get like $10. Costs too much in bank statements and photo copies to bother…Locally, unless you are on disability, you must work 25 hours weekly to get stamps. Work rule applies after you have been unemployed for 3 months, stamps stop unless you get PT job unless you are parent to small kids.

I know some have gone to work where you can get free food if you feel able. Staffing the soup kitchen will get you free dinner, may access to excess. The food pantries always need help & will give you what is a bit over-ripe for fresh stuff/breads. If you call up Salvation Army, you will be told if you can get ‘commodities’ which is food handed out at end of month to stretch stamps…

You can work for the buffets or hotel’s buffet service caterers, you get all the food left over at events unless the person paying wishes to keep left overs. Fast food is not required to feed you and screwed up/rejected orders are usually shredded/trashed to keep employees from eating it.

Other choices, could be REALLY good time to go to Vocational Rehab if you do not have educational training & pick some training for a job (which can be part-time) or ask them to get you a service job (and they provide clothing/transport money)…Really, you can work at anything and get $700 a month without affecting your payments. Craigslist is SO neat if you want part-time work as it is LOADED in most cities also provides lots of career opportunities or internships to get anyone started in any kind of work (plus under table opportunities). If you reach 2 years since you applied for SSDI payments, you will have Medicare offered to you for $100 a month. (If is possible your state will allow you medicaid if you are on disability and work, you pay a small monthly fee to get this but this depends on if your state offers this program. You usually use the food stamps application to apply.). If you are Medicare eligible, I would definitely think about working, but you could think about getting some education training if you want even good part-time job options instead of minimum wage work. You can earn up to $1100 a month but it will eventually end your health insurance with Medicare so you need to abstain from earning more than $700 unless you are ready to work full-time soon)…

That sounds absolutely horrible. You must live in a Red, conservative Republican State.

I live in WI and earn $769/month from SSi. I also get $190/month for Foodshare, a free 350 mins/month tracfone, and also energy essistance (which essentially covers my heat & electric bill; I am extremely conservative with energy use). I also have free health insurance, but only use it for my psychotherapist.

Do you rent, pay any utilities, or live with others? I don’t. I live alone, pay $450/month in rent and also have to pay for eletric/heat & water. I think the reason I qualify for so much assistance is because I live alone, rent, and have to pay utilities.
