Wow. Ok.
I can see how this can be controversial. I really don’t know whether to trust Gavin Newsom to help homeless / mentally ill people in a dignified way. I hope people are not abused in the process of cleaning up the streets so businesses and homeowners stop complaining it’s hurting their property value when homeless/mentally ill people are near by.
My guess is that I have a wildly unpopular opinion on this. I think it might help very mentally I’ll people to become stable and have a better life.
I’m aware there needs to be protections in place for mentally I’ll people, but I still think that it might help a lot of people feel better with treatment and become part of society in a healthy way. I gave high hopes for this program.
I’m not understanding what exactly is changing here. Can’t they already force mentally ill to take medications through the courts? I know I was forced to take my initial doses. Can’t they already court order treatment?
Edit: Maybe I need to read the article more closely…
Mentally ill uninsured homeless people cannot be forced. They can be asked if they need help and but many are not in the right mind to accept help / aid and sleep on the streets or any public space. Even through terrible weather they will refuse shelter due to paranoia / fear.
That’s weird. I got picked up by police for walking on an interstate. was put in psychiatric care. I was forced a haldol shot without consent nor court. Then later I went before a judge and they ordered that I stay in hospital longer and be forced invega initial shots. I was there for over a month. This was in Ohio during my long trek towards the east coast. Maybe the difference is that I committed a “crime” by walking on intersate? IDK.
I think maybe because California has a massive homeless population. There are too many. I know when i was homeless in St. Louis - i was constantly found by the police sleeping in my car and asked to sleep somewhere else. But i think in the police just can’t deal with 100k homeless.
Maybe I just picked the wrong(or right, depending how you look at it) state to get picked up in .
It was a good thing for you right?
Yeah it worked out ok on the invega. COuldve done without the unnecessary haldol shot though. They just gave me that because I had a disagreement with nurse.
Invega worked out in the end though.
