Is lack of motivation/avolition a side effect of the antipsychotics?
Also are negative symptoms side effects of the a.p we take or is it not related to the side effects?
If not a side effect of meds then why do we generate this problem?

From my own experience this is a side effect of the antipsychotics.
Good to have a hobby or something. Meds might sedate you sometimes and yeah mess with motivation.
Lack of drive is one of the negative symptoms of schizophrenia.
It’s both from the meds and the illness.
Even if it was all from meds having positive symptoms without meds is a lot worse than severe negative symptoms. I am telling you from my experience bcz both my positive and negative symptoms are severe. Without meds I hide in my bed from fear of people while hallucinating and being suicidal and homicidal. With meds I am slightly less in bed but I have no fears or paranoia or other issues. So positive symptoms can create negative symptoms.
What I recommend is Vraylar, partial antagonists cause less negative symptoms. Abilify and Rexulti too but these can cause addiction and hypersexuality side effects according to FDA and Health Canada. It happened to me. For me sadly, Vraylar isn’t available in Canada.
Talk to your psychiatrist about it of course.
You need him to prescribe it anyways.
But how to know for sure?
The meds I am on right now are fine for me for now.
It is a normal symptom of sz. Meds have the chance to exacerbate it.
It is caused by not having enough dopamine in a certain part of your brain. Whereas positive symptoms are caused by having too much dopamine in another area. That is the theory anyways.
Is that why dopamine regulators fixed my negative symptoms? Abilify, Rexulti and Vraylar lower dopamine when its high and raises dopamine when its low. Not sure if they act on all the brain but I didn’t have real negative symptoms while on Abilify.
I have this problem every time I wake up. I have to plan for 2 hours in bed contemplating the day ahead, and then get out of bed and smoke and drink coffee.
Motivation does not come easy.
I have drive and focus when I am doing a task, it’s just getting started I have a problem with.
Once I get going I sort of get past it, but it’s irritating waking up and feeling like that.
Enjoy what I do, so it kinda ruins it for me
As far as I know there aren’t any meds specifically designed for help w negative symptoms though if you found one that did help thats great!
May I know what job you do?
I am a landscaper.
Happy cake day BTW !!!
I’ve never been particularly ambitious, and definitely struggle when it comes to thinking of future goals.
