Post anything u find interesting about astronomy. I always liked what Pluto actually looks like
I was raised on the blurry image of it. Where we didnt know what it looked like up close
Fun fact, Jupiter is so big it doesn’t technically orbit the sun. It orbits a spot a few meters above the sun.
Plutos a planet! I don’t care what they say.
Doesn’t Jupiter and everything else in the solar system orbit around the barycenter, though? I don’t think anything really orbits the sun if you want to get that technical about it.
Jupiter takes many bullets (comets and asteroids) that might otherwise have endangered life on earth. Was also associated with many chief deities in ancient myths, seems oddly appopriate.
It was my understanding that for all other plants the barycenters were within the boundaries of the sun, except Jupiter. But I’m not a scientist, so I don’t really know. Just read it on IFL science a while back.
But if Jupiter pulls that strongly on the sun, wouldn’t that pull the entire barycenter of the solar system outside of the boundaries of the sun? I’m pretty sure all the planets orbit around the same barycenter.
I’m not a scientist. I just posted a fun fact that I read forever ago. Here, go read it yourself and ask them questions.
I love astronomy, it’s one of the few things I can read about for hours.
Yeah, I did read that article. It was all over the internet. I’m just trying to understand how it could be correct that Jupiter is special in not orbiting the sun.
I don’t think it works that way @anon9798425. For instance think of the Earth-Moon pair. They definitely are a part of our solar system and they gravitate around each other, irrespective of Earth’s rotation around the Sun.
I agree!

One of the most interesting things to me is the way stars are created. I’ve loved space as long as I can remember.
The moon “orbits the earth”, but since the earth “orbits the sun”, doesn’t the moon then also orbit the same barycenter as the earth? This NASA page says all the planets orbit around the same barycenter. Which, if true, would make the “Jupiter doesn’t orbit the sun” argument meaningless.
Jupiter is special because its mass is so much more than the other planets.
All that’s being said is that Jupiter’s orbit is outside of the Sun (the barycenter of the orbit).
looks like a marble, just like the ending of MIB
I took these pictures of the moon through my telescope a while ago, happy they turned out.
I love space!! Saturn is probably my favorite planet, but that’s also probably because sailor Saturn is my favorite sailor scout.
I also like the fact that I’m made from stardust. I feel like an alien a lot of the time. Maybe in a past life I came from somewhere else in the universe.
I read this a while ago and thought it was interesting.
