Artificial intelligence is a bad name for something that might become sentient,

Maybe name it Cylon. or Replicas.

if that is what they are trying to create.

Working with AI in the future is going to require everybody agree that an algorithm spitting out lines of speech isn’t sentient no matter how well it mimics the condition.

They should not give it a personality.

Even if it’s fake. People will get tricked into thinking they are communicating with some kind of being

Meanwhile rats and octopuses are sentient

@agent101g i think you just came up with a cool name for them. A mimic.

I don’t know. Have you read the Chinese Room Thought Experiment?

Basically AI may know Chinese, but doesn’t understand Chinese lol…

Believing in God has made me understand there are limits. AI cannot have a soul or even be sentient.

It’s not “BSG” Battle Star Galactica lol!!!

Sentience can be tested. We’re going to have an ethical quandry if AI passes these tests.

They are quite intelligent. Their biggest limiting factor is their very short lifespan.

Octopi are interesting because they evolved their intelligence completely seperate from homo sapiens…

They are not connected to us closely on the tree of evolution

You totally watched that Octopi series a few weeks ago hosted by Paul Rudd didn’t you  ?

No, I actually got my info from a Mark Rober video on YouTube where he designed an obstacle course for one to go through lol. I’ve also seen a good Doc called “My Octopus Teacher.” Octopi seem pretty fashionable right now. I am not even aware of a Paul Rudd series, I will look for it.

My basic biology taught me that Upper order Mollusc like the Octopi are the like one of the first upper order animals that are capable of learned behavior. That is such a deal breaker in evolutionary behavior and credit to our octopi friends…except that little blue ringed octopus out here that is incredibly poisonous! Welcome to Australia. Capable of learning and packs an evolutionary end to humans!

Kudos to you mate for living down in Oz and surviving!

I’ve seen some pics of your spiders that if I found in my pad I’d run and find the nearest flamethrower LOL.

Haha…yeah tell me about it. Lovely country of drought and bust and even the cuter critters like kangaroos can pack a punch! Luckily we are mostly domesticated out here in the suburbs but we get lots of poisonous spiders but they aren’t aggressive which is good and the odd snake which usually aren’t of the bad variety.

I suppose the only way they really could become sentient is if digital components are paired with organic parts, like a organic brain. It’s pretty sci fi, but it will probably be doable at some point. But maybe it won’t be done out of ethical reasons.
