Are people with schizophrenia allowed to get a driver license in California?

My drivers license was suspended for not paying a ticket 4 years ago, i want to renew it and the DMV driver license application asks if i have any disabilities or a disorder affecting my driving ability? Are there any people from California who were diagnosed with schizophrenia and still drive vehicle (have a driver license0?

I have a licence. Why couldn’t we. Yes, I have hallucinated behind the wheel. I can tell when it is a hallucination and know when and when not to react.

I don’t think it’s restrictions . Maybe more so of them wondering when will I get my license,

True, in that case, it depends on the person and their symptoms.

Yeah sure. I’ve always had a license. I get talked to by the police all the time. They just wonder what i’m doing parked in odd places. I’ve told them I had schizophrenia numerous times.

I live in California and I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1980 when I was 19 years old. I got a drivers license when I was 17 and I’ve driven most of my life. I don’t know what medical records the DMV might have on me but I have never volunteered the information that I have schizophrenia. So I don’t know if some other agency might have given the DMV info about my diagnosis but it’s never come up.

My disease does not affect my driving so I always answer “no” to that question and I am not lying. By the way, over the years I have gotten several traffic tickets, mostly for speeding and I have been in several accidents. But only one accident was my fault.

Would NOT disclose schizo as a problem that affects driving. As far as I know, unless you have gone unconscious or have seizures, there are no US states that ban schizo from driving. That is not the case in Europe. Britain put extensive limitations on their schizo cases, doing work boot camps and disallowing some cases from driving…some of the anti-psychotic shots due cause seizures for some but US doesn’t enforce any limits until you have an accident after health problem.
