One time when I was living on the street I asked this Vietnam veteran if living on the street was as bad as being in a war, and he laughed like that was the funniest thing he had ever heard.
My bio father never recovered from being in the VN war.
Judging from what I have heard of it, war is a totally overwhelming experience. When I was in the army many of the NCO’s and officers had combat experience. That was good for the army. We still did not think we could be Russia, though. At that time Russia had 45,000 tanks. We had 7,000, and back then their tanks were just as good as ours. In 1980 I voted for Ronald Reagan for his defense policy. You don’t build 45,000 tanks just to watch them rust.
When my family was in Chicago, my great uncle was in a lot of trouble with crime and drugs, mainly coke, both using and selling. So when he went to court for one of his multiple offenses, the judge gave him two ultimatums. Either he could be locked up, or go to Nam. He choosed Nam. He was a great photographer for the army, and made a career afterwards based on that vocation. However, he never recovered from his PTSD from the pernicious war.
