Anyone take anything for OCD?

Just wondering if anyone takes something for OCD. If so, may I ask what and if you notice a difference, including side effects?

Back in college my psychiatrist believed that I had OCD and ADHD and I was on Adderall and a number of benzos because of it being specifically I was on clonazepam. I don’t really like the effect that benzos has on my mind or body

Clonazepam makes you feel kind of groggy it can give you a weird mouth feel if you are on large doses of it but for the most part it doesn’t have many side effects it may affect your weight may affect your metabolism

My seroquel has majorly helped me ocd symptoms

I’ve found that an SSRI is good treatment for OCD. I’ve had OCD all my life basically, and the only medication that touched it has been 100mg of prozac, which is a super high dosage. I have not noticed any side effects, but really, with as much medication as I am on, I’m positive that the medication doesn’t show side effects because the major tranquilizers do it already.

Thanks, y’all. I’m on diazepam as-needed (usually at night), and I’m on seroquel. Maybe upping seroquel?

I was on Zoloft for my OCD, but it was too activating and caused issues with my Bipolar. Currently just using therapy for my OCD issues, which helps. Somedays are really hard, and other days I hardly notice.

Unfortunately no
Having rapid cycling bipolar I can’t tolerate antidepressants

I don’t know if my issue is ocd, mania, or both.

Keto diet. Yes. It changes my outlook on life radically and immediately. The OCD is not gone. But a lot less. It does make me hypomanic in the beginning.

Efexor helped as well. Though it wasn’t prescribed for OCD, and I wasn’t even diagnosed with OCD. It made me more indifferent and numb. Which is kind of the opposite to OCD for me, where I’m hyperfocused on scary stuff because I care too much. I would not recommend Efexor though. I didn’t care about important things/people anymore. And withdrawals were horrid.

Saffron tea helped. Be extremely careful with it and read about it and ask your doc if you ever wish to try. It is the strongest herb I ever tried. It works as strong as a chemical antidepressant for me. It is easy to overdose. Be careful.

Well, I increased a med that I was already on for a list of other reasons after trying so many other things for a very specific manifestation of my ocd called excoriation disorder. The med is Topamax. It is used as a weight loss med, a mood stabilizer and a migraine med. My old pdoc had heard of it sometimes helping with excoriation disorder with a little bit higher dose so she wanted to try. It is helping. It is also helping with other ocd symptoms too. I just the other day realized I’m not counting which is a comfort thing, haven’t been doing it in a while. And I just don’t…care. I don’t mean that in a apathy way. I mean I’m not concerned with little details as much. I don’t care that I can count to five as I’m pouring the coffee so it will be the same no matter what cup I’m using. Nobody cares, that’s dumb.

My doctor tried to put me on topomax and I was resistant because I didn’t want more meds but maybe I should take it

I think if you are going to take a medicine it is a good thing to take one that has as many benefits as possible. Topamax is a med with many approved treatments. I think it has stopped me from ballooning to 300 pounds. Although 250 is bad enough.

edit. Although, it does have a nickname. “dopamax”. I guess it makes people feel not as intelligent. Well guess what buddy, You were never smart, the med is just giving you insight. lol

Be careful with that one. It can cause severe irritability and aggression. I had an aggressive psychotic episode due to it.

Wow that does not sound fun.

I think I heard somewhere that an AD called “Luvox” was good for OCD.

I’ve heard that Topamax is good for alcoholism.

OMG, @Leaf! I have a family member who had this when they were quite young (maybe 14?). I didn’t know what it was called until you posted it, and I looked it up. It was awful! I worry about that person very much. They would leave bloody footprints in their wake, literally. Had to wear gloves and socks at all times. And I had a student with trichotillomania. All that stuff is just so sad. I’m really, really sorry you had that.

I’ve been on Topamax before for migraine prevention. It never did much for me but make me foggy. I didn’t notice much difference in the way of my weight either going on it or getting off of it. I don’t think I had aggression issues, either.

Unnnng i am feeling vicarious pain lol
