Is anyone here working in STEM/studying it?
What is that? I have a degree in physiotherapy.
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics = STEM
Is that a degree in university?
It’s not a single degree
I meant is anyone working a job related to those or studying a degree related to those
I was doing a math major 10 years ago and then got sick. I plan on doing computer science some day. More money and power, basically.
How old are you if I can ask?
I am in STEM right now.
Very cool. What is it?
Neuroscience. Working towards my PhD.
I looked that up before getting into physiotherapy but it seems that the only work you can do with it is teaching and research.
Yes. I want to do research.
I want to teach mathematics or do research one day…
I’m 31. I hope to get my degree some day. I don’t really have a plan. I’m just hoping I recover some day. I’m one of those people where age isn’t much of a factor. It’s more of a goal of mine to have a degree than put it to use. I’m looking into WGU online so it’s practically free for me. I would transfer and do my last 2 years there.
I was never really good at math. I mean people tell me I was and I was to some extent, but I was late to the game, and it’s a young man’s game. I recommend getting serious now if you want to become good. I went from being pratically the best at my local community college in math to being average or below average in math at a competitive university. But I also had stuff going on and schizophrenia developing so there’s that. I transferred as an economics major but wasn’t in love with the subject or lack of rigor compared to what math majors do. You’ll probably love real analysis and stuff like that. That’s going to be one of your first real, upper division rigor math classes if you major in math.
I knew my self and my skills. Compared to the average person, I was gifted. But compared to the genius or the real gifted people, I was a moron or average. That’s life pretty much. I just happened to stumble upon math at a late age. It was my worst subject in high school. I took remedial classes at community college but ended up getting As and doing well and finishing the sequence.
Economics is fun too. But if you can understand math you can do pratically anything and go into any field.
Good luck.
I recommend this class for fun. It’s pretty much discrete math, but it’s good. I completed it. It’s not easy, but well worth it.
I dropped out of a physics programme or degree and then had to withdraw from a mathematics one whilst dealing with schizophrenia.
I now do finance and economics. So it’s not stem, but I do have some memory of doing STEM.
Happy to see you are interested in maths and make sure to put your all into it! It’s a very valued degree and people will be very impressed with you being had a degree in it!
I’ll have to ask yourself and the other users who do maths on here for help now and then! Whilst I am doing economics, there’s a use of mathematics in this subject and I could always do with helping with!
I hope you get the degree. I know what you mean about value to having completed one, especially in a subject like mathematics.
You may be showing a trait of imposter syndrome (you believe you are not as good as you can be). I’m sure you’re fully able and potential to complete a maths degree - you proved this in community college. And with those grades; the admission tutors at the higher institution you originally enrolled in, knew you had/have ability! Good luck, all the best!
I do STEAM for teaching. Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. Good stuff good stuff. So in a small way I am doing STEAM. Exciting children is a must just my mission statement.
@zwolfgang is a STEM major and I think he’s majoring in nuclear engineering.
Whatever stage you are with your academic endeavours I wish you all much success.Science was not a strong area for me. Last exams I ever took for biology, chemistry and physics I got about 17% . I had no natural ability at those so made not much effort at them.
