They have bad effects for the heart over the long term. You’re at hogher risk of heart disease if you use these drugs. Esp the newer generation with the metabolic effects.

Is there conclusive evidence that it’s the medicines that are causing the shorter lifespans, though?
A lot of people with mental illnesses die younger than normal, due to untreated diseases and suicide, that could bring the average down a bit as well.

I’m wondering if the meds are the cause, or the cause for the need for meds is.

Actually, there is evidence that those who smoke and have serious psychiatric disorders (SPD) die 15 years earlier, while non-smokers with SPD die only 5 years earlier. One of my theories is that tranquilizers increase desire for stimulants like nicotine.

I’ve often wondered how much of the difference in life expectancy was caused by smoking. Now I guess I know, or at least have a strong indication. Thanks for posting the article. Yes, I’m working. The local manufacturing industry seems to be doing much better than it has for a long time here in the US, so I’ve gone back to working in manufacturing as I did in my first jobs in my youth. Maybe I’ll return to my computing career later.

I’m going to keep taking the antipsychotics long term even if I lose 20 years of life

I sometimes wonder about the decision to put me on antipsychotics in the first place, but now that I am on them I can’t get off of them. It’s always a disaster when I try. I often think I don’t have enough time to do the things I want to do, but I waste the time I do have. Sometimes I think it would be a relief to die.

6 days a week. More than full time. Too much time for my taste, really. But there are old sayings about that. Feast or famine. When it rains, it pours. I suppose I prefer this feast to famine.
