Animals instincts amaze me

I thought of this topic because I saw my dog doing some kicking with her back legs after going to the bathroom(This behavior is to spread their scent and mark their territory). No one teaches a bird how to make their nest or a spider how to spin their web, they just know instinctually how to do it.

I find it amazing that they can know instinctually with no one teaching them these behaviors.

Are humans a bit the same?

Nature itself is so much more intelligent than we give it credit for. I feel at home in nature

I don’t know Aziz. I suppose we have instincts too. It’s harder to sort them out from learned traits though because humans usually have someone around to teach them.

Hmm. . .

I thought dogs kick up dirt as a remnant of the old habit of burying their feces. I guess that teaching has changed.

I always assumed that too until I looked it up on google.

Humans seem unique in the animal kingdom, I don’t know any other species (maybe there are a few) who’s offspring are so dependent on their parents for so long. Babies can’t do anything, they have some instincts, like they know how to breast feed, but not much else. They just lay around for years and can’t fend for themselves in any way. With other species, the babies are much more independent much quicker.

But even though we are one of the weakest as infants, once we grow up we dominate the world, funny how that works out.

When I went to breastfeed my son he wouldn’t suckle, I brushed his cheek and he started, no one taught me that. But I found out later that’s a thing they teach you but for me it was instinct.

I disagree. We grow up to ruin the world. The world is just fine without us.

I don’t know what you are disagreeing with. I didn’t say we haven’t made a mess of things. I said we dominate the world. What we have done with that dominance is another question.

The one that shocks me is polar bears hiding their nose with their paws. Are they smart enough to figure out that it’s black and stands out, or do they just copy the other bears? And if so, who was the first bear to set the trend? What was he like? :bear: :ice_cube:
