I am not a morning person, I tend to sleep on and off till afternoon and my husband complains, says haven’t I slept enough in the night? I feel so lazy half the day, I’m only more awake after the afternoon time. I’m kind of a night owl person but is it normal to sleep so long into the day? Is it laziness do you think? Or the meds/sza?
Lazy or not, it diminishes your life to stay in bed so much. You might ask your therapist for some med. that picks you up some. Abilify was classified as an antipsychotic, but I got a lift from that. They eventually had to take me off of it because I was too amp’ed up. But you can’t always extrapolate from another person’s experience with a drug, because different people react to them differently. I knew one guy that could take any amount of Stellazine, and it had no effect on him. Just a little of that ■■■■ made me go to bed.
If you are awake at night, it just means you have a different sleep schedule. If you want to be awake during the day, cut out the day naps, and train your body to be awake during the day. It will be hard at first. It’s not laziness, just your body is used to a different sleep pattern.
I’ve been like this post psychosis too. I sleep too much to keep a job/go to school. And its not just sleep I need but down time where I am relaxing and able to not exert myself. Even when I’m very well I still don’t have “normal” nights sleep like other people. Its almost always 12 hours, can be even longer if I’m busy.
I think it is just part of the illness personally.
In my case I think it’s depression and side effects from the medications. Even despite that, I was always more of a night owl than a morning person, and that’s just one of the things that makes me me.

It just sounds like you have a different sleep schedule. Like @anon55031185 said, you can train yourself to be awake more during the day, and asleep more during the night. It will take some time and patience to switch your sleep patterns around. But it’s doable.
I don’t think it’s laziness, but I don’t know you in real life, so I can’t really say one way or the other. But in my experience, many people with Sz or SzA really struggle with negative symptoms that can appear as laziness, but it’s not laziness. It’s just the illness.
And yes, meds can make you more tired / fatigued, which could make you feel like you need more sleep. Don’t beat yourself up about it.
I sleep all night yet I am still always tired during the day and stay in bed a lot. I think its my risperidone and sz.
I actually go to bed normal time about 11pm so when I said I’m a night owl I just meant I’m more awake in night but about 11pm or so, or even earlier, I go to bed. I seem to be tired more nowadays. Maybe it’s my meds because I am on higher dose and started haloperidol last year. It’s supposedly not as sedating as some other AP’s but it’s relaxing effect. When I took amisulpride on its own I was less sleepy as a side effect of that is insomnia. When I’m hypomanic I stay up very late too.
And yes maybe it’s the sza as well. My avolition and anhedonia accompanies the desire to sleep.
So I think it’s more meds and sza than sleep routine.
Can’t help thinking I’m lazy though!
I forget what risperdone feels like i remember taking and going off it fast.
Lots of users complain of it saying they stay in bed a lot on it but its the best for my positive symptoms.
Yeah it’s probably the meds zonking you out @Hadeda
But you’ve got to push yourself to get up in the mornings.
Sleeping into the afternoon is not healthy.
So I can do my essentials. I make coffee, I take bmeds with a freaking meal. Today it will be eggs and sausages. (In my head) I wouldn’t eat if it wasn’t for Geodon. Walk the dogs. And I am back in bed.
You’re not lazy. I also spend a LOT of time in bed. I would do something then I would lie down for a bit. Then I’d do more stuff and lie down again. I can’t cope to be functional for 12 hours plus like most people.
The meds zonk me out too @Hadeda but I manage to get up during the mornings.
Although I frequently lie down on my couch to rest during the day.
Im sorta lazy in that fact i usually get 12 hours in. But then im in bed by 6pm usually and up before the sun comes up.
I think if you want me tbh, is getting up and moving your body will make you less tired. Your body wants to burn off calories you get from eating. When you don’t move around, your body becomes weak. Movement will definitely be hard at first because your body isn’t used to it, but I guarantee if you do gentle exercises at least twice a day, you will feel less exhausted and generally more alert.
I’m not lecturing you, but I do want to encourage you to move, so your body doesn’t lose all muscle strength permanently. When I was in the hospital for weeks and weeks, I lost a lot of strength in my body because I was stuck in bed. I’m now working on getting back that strength. It takes persistence and patience with yourself. I know you can do it.
I try to walk inside the house everyday using a stepcounter on my cellphone.
Well that’s awesome. You got this.
