I think brain rot is a myth or highly exaggerated.

Its not going to wreck your brain its just not practical use of your time.

scrolls cat videos for 93 hours :face_with_monocle:

I think back in 2013 i used to take weeks off from screen use and i honestly noticed no difference except increased boredom lol.

Its kind of like if you have to sit with your eyes closed and meditate a lot. Your basically in a trance when you meditate. When kids scroll on apps for a long time its also a trance like state

I do think that over reliance on the internet might make it make it harder to develop analytical thinking skills.

I agree with that. Its reducing critical thinking skills by relying on it and overusing it.

Between first getting hospitalised i 1975 and getting online in late 1996, I had little in the way of intellectual stimulation. My wife, until she got vascular dementia, was far more street wise than me,but not book learned. What cognitive stimulation I had came from going to the library and looking at books. The best library,in terms of size and books etc, being nowhere near as well stocked as the library I went into in the USA.

I’ve had more intellectual stimulation each year I’ve been online than in all of the period 1975 -1996. The internet has neither improved greatly or worsened greatly the ADHD like cognitive problems I have.

I think lots of screen time is the opposite of brain rot. I read many helpful things and learn a lot by reading news articles and watching political videos on YouTube. I said about 6 months ago that I isolate a lot and am not having as many life experiences as I should but watching very diverse videos on YouTube enables me to hold a halfway intelligent conversation with people.

Yeah I kind of feel similar. If you are watching/reading interesting topics and learning stuff about the world I don’t really see how it is so different from watching TV or reading newspapers.

But I think the issue of “brainrot” is more about the mindlessness of spending hours scrolling on things like instagram reels where there is no real intellectual stimulation.

I spend a lot of time reading online or reading books on my kindle and I get a lot of eye strain from the LED lighting so I use FL - 41 glasses from theraspecs. They really help my eyes not fall out of my head. I don’t think reading online is giving me brain rot either.
