Advice about my brother

I was able to get my brother admitted, they have diagnosed him with bipolar disorder, and he believes that I told them that he is bipolar, when I have said nothing like that to them, I just explained the situation and everything that has been happening since 2019. I think he might have sz and might not just be bipolar. I am not sure what else to do. He said he is going to get a lawyer because we are violating his rights and we are harassing him, when he has been trying to provoke my father constantly, to get a reaction out of my dad… He has some tried to commit suicide. He’s constantly provoking my father without reason and he lies about everything and tries to play and victim.

I’m not sure what to do at this point, but I think him being admitted will help in some way.

I think so too… I just want him to be okay. But he sees it as me trying to ruin his life rn.

You did the right thing. Just hope the mental health team is wise and figures out what is going on with him

My parents made me go to a hospital…… and I understand after they made me go to the hospital. So he should understand as well.

If he’s lacking insight then be prepared for it to be tough going.

Yeah it’s going to be tough. He is really upset with me right now. My sisters think I made the right call. The police has been to my home like 3 or 4 times this year because of stuff with him and my father and my dad just wants him to leave… I want him to get better.

Yeah I agree/ hope he will see that it is the right thing for him eventually.

I hope they will too. They have diagnosed him as bipolar so far. He thinks I was the one who told them he is bipolar, but I haven’t said anything to them about that.

Sounds like how I was with my family during onset.

I refused to acknowledge medication and the illness.

I too refused to acknowledge that I needed the meds until my second break. It’s a tough situation to be in.

Tell him that since you’re not qualified to diagnose at all, they will do their own assessment of him while he’s there and will determine on their own what to think

idk what to say, the last thing on my mind when i was at onset, the last thing i wanted to do was upset people & esp family but it seems to come hand in hand, i was able to keep the symptom drama to a minimum somehow but i was compliant after they forced me on meds so that was easier on them.

seems like a tricky situation.

@LilyoftheValley I’ll talk with him again tomorrow, if he will talk with me. I told him this, but he believes that I had something to do with his diagnosis. He said I need to stop telling them things.

Thanks @Wave I have tried many times to get him to go seek help. I even offered to go with him. I hope this helps and he won’t hate me forever.

Let’s see what happens. I feel bad about doing it this way, but it was necessary

Yeah my older brother has schizophrenia as well and doesn’t know he’s sick. He’s been in and out of jails and hospitals for the last 10 years. He’s in jail right now for things he did while delusional. It’s a mess. He won’t do anything for himself and no one can deal with him anymore. He doesn’t even understand his situation or options.

I’m sorry to hear about your brother. I hope he will seek help one day.

Like what Eric’s bat said? It’s unfortunate but like if things can get bad if you don’t manage them. So I hope that you and your brother can figure things out in your brother doesn’t end up being managed by other people.

Now that he’s been hospitalized it may help him legally. Which is good. It’s the whole picture then.

I also refused meds until my psychosis was so severe, I was in the psych ward and they forced meds down my throat

If schizophrenia is hereditary then maybe speak to his dr and mention that you have schizophrenia and you worried that perhaps he has it too
