Abilify vs. Latuda 🥊

Hello fine folk of the forum :dizzy:

Could anyone please explain the differences between Abilify and Latuda?

Pdoc says she thinks Latuda would be a better med for me than Abilify.

For reference:

  • I have SZA- Bipolar type, with moderate symptoms of both depression and bipolar.

  • Abilify worked well. I was up to 20mg before I jumped ship completely.

  • Weight gain is my arch nemesis, with akathesia and sexual side effects tied for a close second.

If anybody has tried both or just Latuda, it’d be super helpful to hear of your experiences.

Also, if anybody has done GeneSight that would be helpful too :sweat_smile:.

Latuda helps with depressive episodes of bipolar I / SZ
Abilify helps with manic episodes of bipolar I

Also I feel Laguna is much more weight neutral.

I’ve been on both but am on 80mg Latuda / 160 Geodon and weight is much more manageable.

Aripiprazole is a dopamine modulator but that doesn’t really matter if they have the same effect.

You have to do that yourself??

Yeah but it is also used in major depression, can bipolar depression really be that different?

I’ve been on abilify and Latuda. 120 mg Latuda, 80 mg Latuda and I can’t remember the dose of abilify. Abilify made me do nothing but sleep for the brief period I was on it. Latuda gave me a flat effect…I don’t think my mania ever was that bad but a few times in my life. Latuda helped enough. I was on it four years and then the akathisia set in. These meds effect everyone so differently though.

Latuda wasn’t good for me. It caused so many side effects and I was having tardive dyskinesia for a good 3 months when I was on it. I discontinued it after 3 months.

I was on Abilify injections for 2 months and Latuda for 2 weeks. Both made me very uncomfortable. I couldn’t tolerate them. I have this weird reaction to some antipsychotics that makes me depersonalize, get this feeling of impending doom, and have intrusive thoughts of harm which makes me panic. It’s like akathisia without the need to move. Same thing on Haldol and Fluphenazine. Though I’ve never heard of anyone else who has this kind of reaction so I wouldn’t worry about it.
