It is imperative that we maintain the individual’s right to liberty, particularly when it comes to sex. True sexual liberty includes the right to say “no” as much as it includes the right to say “yes”. If we don’t maintain the individual’s right to autonomy over their own body there will be increasing numbers of alienated and mentally damaged people in the democracies of the west. The growing number of alienated people will give rise to darker underground groups which will exert an undertow on the democratic process. Personally, I don’t care how promiscuous someone is as long as they don’t try to force their promiscuity on me. I believe that we should make free birth control universally available. But the moment anyone tries to force sex on me when I don’t want it, we have a real problem. The great philosopher John Stuart Mill said that a person’s autonomy over their own conscience and their own body is absolute. This is contrary to human nature, but it is a standard we must maintain in order to maintain our leadership in the world and our standard of living. Unfortunately, it is human nature to regard both the conscience and a person’s sexuality as belonging to society. It is something we must overcome.
