50 percent of individuals suffering from schizophrenia have a history of substance abuse

People with schizophrenia often engage in substance abuse as a way to self-medicate or alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression

Although substance abuse cannot cause schizophrenia, it can act as an environmental trigger. Someone with existing genetic risk factors for the disorder may develop an active case of schizophrenia after extended substance abuse. Using drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine and amphetamines, can also exacerbate schizophrenic symptoms and worsen their severity.

My first episode was put down as drug-induced psychosis. They were very close to calling it sz, but my drugs councillor stopped them from doing that.

It only took a couple of years for it to happen again and again before I got the diagnosis.

I did drugs from 11 to 17, with a relapse at 22/23. I did pretty much everything you could think of. It makes me angry that people deal drugs to children.

I went several years getting high and longer than that getting drunk every day. Looking back I know I was self-medicating. Although I probably did and said a lot of funny stuff back then, as I am a bit of a joker, I wouldn’t go back to it now.
