Women rely partly on smell when choosing friends

Here’s the article rewritten by Chat GPT for a 5 year old audience.

Why Smells Help Us Pick Friends

When we meet someone new, we might decide really fast if we want to be friends with them. We look at what they look like—but guess what? Our noses help us decide too!

Some scientists did a study to learn more about how we choose friends, especially other girls who just met each other. They found out that how someone smells can help us know if we might like them, even before we talk to them.

A long time ago, a scientist gave people stinky T-shirts to smell (ew!), and they picked which ones smelled the best to them. The funny thing is, the best-smelling shirts belonged to people who had different kinds of body stuff inside them. That might help people have strong babies, so it made sense.

Now, these new scientists wanted to know: Can smell help us pick friends, not just boyfriends or girlfriends? So they asked 40 girls to play a ā€œspeed-friendingā€ game:
1. First, the girls looked at pictures and said who looked like a fun friend.
2. Then, they wore T-shirts for a whole day and gave them to the scientists.
3. Next, the girls smelled the shirts (without knowing who wore them!) and said who they might want as a friend.
4. Then they talked to each other in real life for a few minutes.
5. After talking, they smelled the shirts again and said if they still liked the same people.

Guess what? The people they liked by smell were often the same people they liked after talking! That means their noses helped them pick new friends—even if they didn’t know it.

And the smells weren’t just from perfume. They were from things like what kind of pet someone has, what they eat, or what soap they use.

So our noses are little helpers when we meet new people!

The translation didn’t include this interesting part of the article:

The only caveat: The preference was reversed in women who were taking oral birth control.

This theory is all wrong. Every time I approach someone and take a deep sniff in their armpit I get rejected :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I must stink !:zany_face::joy:

No girlfriends….

Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where they all stink because of Jerry’s car and everyone avoids them because they stink.even Elaine’s boyfriend.:face_savoring_food:

Maybe I have some girlfriends on this forum in an online way .
They can’t smell me online :face_savoring_food:

I mean, I’m not a woman, but I choose friends based on who doesn’t have a smell. Like, if I can’t smell you, you can be my friend. It’s always been that way. I will get headaches if you are around me and you’re wearing a heavy scent or you have body odor, or worst of all, a combination of those two scents.

I would assume women would think the same way. Unless they like certain smells? I guess?

I can actually love body smell and even bo of my partner .
It can have a safe comforting familiar smell.

When I was in Sweden a boyfriend I had had a mentor and i immediately loved him .
Second I saw him I knew that and it wasn’t sexual it was more .

I felt deeper n closer with mentor of his after seeing him only two of three times than I did with bf.

The mentor was a music teacher.

God did I adore him .

To this day I still pray for him .

His name was djordge .

He got lung cancer and died but we visited him in hospital and while there his x visited and she bloody stunk and I mean reeked of extreme body odour but i actually really loved the smell of her.
It was a good smell but possibly majority would disagree.

I’ll always remember how she stank .
Perhaps the stinkiest person I’ve met ever.

I whaled at djordge funeral.one would think he was closer than close and no one else at funeral did but I cried and whaled out loud.

It was a big funeral .

I think he was religious and some form of Christianity Greek Orthodox or more unusual Christianity perhaps.

I visited his grave with my dog more than once.
I put a little bit of cinnamon bun on his grave and picked flowers for his grave and an angel :innocent: I made in pottery I think .

He had a daughter .
She was a musician who lived in Germany as did her stinky mother.

God bless ā€˜em !

The daughter did not stink but that’s a loss not a gain when it’s a good stink .
