In French they also say things “backwards” in many cases.
For example in English we say “Orange juice”. In French they say “Juice d’orange” or literally translated “juice of oranges”. The words are in reverse order, a lot of French is like that.

Not done any language learning since 1974. These were done last year. Admittedly they’re easy, and nowhere near speaking a foreign language fluently- as you lot so admirably do.
English has a lot of words. Both in the dictionary and in words that are actually used.

Long ago, the English court spoke French. (because of William the Conqueror.).
This is why I think in English you often have 2 words to say the same thing, including one of French origin.

What techniques do you all use to improve your foreign language skills?
All I do is watch shows sometimes in the languages I can understand. I find that helps. I tried duolingo once though and that seemed like a pretty great tool.

When I went to Kronos it took me a while to pick up the Klingon. It was a good trip but the beds are rock hard.
It’s amazing that every alien on Star Trek can speak perfect English so it must be an easy language to learn.

lol, I get your point but in Star Trek they have the Universal Translator, the problem with that was that even if it translated another language into English in real time, the mouths of the aliens would still be synced to their language, not the movements of the mouth when speaking English. But it’s just fiction and I buy into it, TNG is my favourite show. I started watching it in 1987 when it was released and I still watch reruns.

Picard is awesome!! In the last one I watched, he died though. They can’t be ending the series that quickly, or maybe I am coming in midstream?

Yeah, I’ve seen Picard, the ending through me for a loop. SPOILER I thought they would revive data and bring him back into existence, instead they kill him off and turn Picard into an android (Synth).
I’m looking forward to season 2 when they are bringing Q into the series. Q is my favourite antagonist in all of fiction and John De Lancie plays the character so well. There have been other Q’s in the various Star Trek series but John is the best, IMHO.
I’m also looking forward to season 3 of The Orville too.
There is another season of Discovery coming and a new series “Strange New Worlds” based on Captain Pike coming. Season 2 of Lower Decks is airing soon too.
