What’s the coldest temperature you’ve experienced?

Well IDK what the actual coldest temperature is, that I’ve experienced. But I can tell you about the time I felt the coldest I’ve ever been!

At age 15, my parents sent me away to a ranch that is for correcting bad kids. There were 4 levels. You had to reach level 4 before they would sign back your custody to your parents.

Anyway, when I got there, I started at level 1. Like every kid. Level 1 and 2 kids were put at the top of a mountain, with a tiny cabin and lots of animals to take care of.

When I got there, I had all of my personal clothing, shoes, and anything else on me, taken away. They put me in some ugly jumpsuit. And then I was forced to sit in a circle of rocks. Like, a really small circle, barely big enough for a fire pit and small “tent” (tarp wrapped around three logs).

I was allowed inside the cabin only for bland, unseasoned food, for dinner, and I was allowed to sleep on the cement floor at night. Breakfast was a bag of trail mix and lunch was instant ramen that we had to cook ourselves. Like, I had to make a fire in my little circle of rocks.

Well, we woke up at like 7 am, every day. And I was immediately sent back to the circle. On one particular day, it was 17 degrees fahrenheit. The ground was frozen… and I had to sit on that frozen dirt… while it was snowing… and the “tent” gave me no shelter from the brutal wind that felt like thousands of tiny icicles stabbing my face. I was so cold that I was sobbing, hoping they would take me inside. But nope!

AND THAT, is the coldest I’ve ever been. Thanks for reading.

Side note: And how was this legal? I have no idea!

However, its 50°f here today in upstate Ny, although I hear the temp is going to quickly plummet tonight.

Dear god. When I read Holes in 6th grade, I thought it was made up. The more I learn about “corrective camps” for kids, the more I realize the book toned it down, if anything.

I’ve literally been in freezing water. Fell into a frozen lake/pond.

Was messing around. Was a good lesson.

No clue. I live in the south so isn’t cold very often. But I have been in the Sierra Nevadas in California in the winter. Lots of snow there.

Once I was in the top bunk. The snow was up to the window outside. Didn’t need an ice chest. Just opened the window and stuck my beer outside. I drank it all before it froze.

About the coldest I’ve ever experienced was in the Army in Germany. I don’t know how many degrees it was, but one night I made the mistake of leaving my boots outside of my sleeping bag in the cold. The next morning I had to take the laces of my boots almost completely out to get my boots on. They were like iron. In the Army you have to deal with the weather a lot. In Korea they have to go out in -30 F weather. Of course, they have the clothes and gear they need to keep from freezing. I was watching this program called “The Great War”, and it said that some Turkish General took his troops out in Summer uniforms, and they got caught by a Winter cold front, and a hundred thousand of them froze to death.
