What happened to Nietzsche?

You know. He was so profound. Or supposed to be. Then he became a vegetable. What happened? Was it really syphilis?

From what I’ve heard he was no Don Juan. His sexual experience was very limited. He got his syphilis, if he had syphilis, from a whorehouse he accidentally went to. I think he thought it was some kind of shop, or something like that. I haven’t read any of Nietzsche’s works, other than his aphorisms. I really like some of his aphorisms. “If you stare long enough into the abyss, the abyss will stare back into you.” Damn that’s good. Some of his beliefs make me uneasy. The idea that some people are above the law makes me uneasy. That business of the “Herd morality for the herd” makes me squirm, but I hear that Nietzsche’s writings can be interpreted in many different ways. Nevertheless, there are often times when the rank and file are in folly, and the rugged individualist has to come to the forefront and do their best to straighten things out. In that sense I can except the aphorism, “The herd morality for the herd.” There are times when the morality of the individual is better than the morality of the mob. Look at Nazi Germany and Fascism in general. Look at some of the excesses of Communism. There has been six times in the twentieth century that over a million people have been murdered. The Turks killed a million and a half Armenians. Hitler killed many millions in his rampage. The Japanese killed ten million in their destruction of the orient. Joseph Stalin killed many millions of Russians. Pol Pot killed a million Cambodians. And the Chinese killed many millions in their “Cultural Revolution”. These are all times when the morality of the individual was more valid than the morality of the herd. … I think Dostoyevsky’s treatment of the “moral superman” was handled very nicely in his novel “Crime and Punishment”. I have read that novel. Maybe someday I’ll read Nietzsche.

Yeah it’s attractive for some. There’s some issues with some modern theories but I don’t think it was sexually bought. I think he probably died a virgin and there were some weird relationships with others…

Still. It’s some interesting thinking and it gets you thinking. I have read some but never really studied philosophy and I think you need to really study that to get a handle of their thought. Still. He proposed some interesting stuff and like many German philosophers made a mark with modern thought.

It’s too much for me but if you get something from such things it’s worth a read.

Sorry, got him confused with Franz Kafka, who wrote; The Castle.

Is that a good book? The Castle?

Yes. It’s very unusual but funny.
