What do mermaids eat?

I’ve thought if there’s a way to live as a mermaid. Do they cut near the lungs and upper chest.

I would go far away. Plenty of fishes
Got to watch out for sharks. I just dream for a day.

I imagined in a few million years I’ll be reincarnated as an intelligent sea animal. But I’d hate to be at the mercy of land dwellers. Whales commit suicide you know. Or is that untrue?

I think that the idea of mermaids came from the ancient beleif in sirens. Which are supposedly half human and half sea creature. They were thought of as being treacherous and luring people to their doom if im remembering right.

The human imagination is nothing if not creative!

I remember seeing scary depictions of mermaids when I was a kid.

Women like sirens that lure men to their death and eat them.

I saw the statue of the mermaid in Copenhagen.
They look like they don’t eat at all.

My nine year old says
“Mermaids eat seaweed. But the bigger problem is how they go to the bathroom.”

That made me smile.

I don’t think they’re bad. Who knows

That makes sense. I like it.

The three sirens were bird-like, if I recall correctly. I’d heard that myths of mermaids may come from manatees and the way they bob in the water.

According to Homer, there were two sirens.

Margaret Atwood has an interesting poem, Siren Song, that I once wrote a paper on. In it, the speaker is a siren. She mentions wanting to get off the island with her sisters and out of her bird suit. See below.

Siren Song

BY MARGARET ATWOOD

This is the one song everyone

would like to learn: the song

that is irresistible:

the song that forces men

to leap overboard in squadrons

even though they see the beached skulls

the song nobody knows

because anyone who has heard it

is dead, and the others can’t remember.

Shall I tell you the secret

and if I do, will you get me

out of this bird suit?

I don’t enjoy it here

squatting on this island

looking picturesque and mythical

with these two feathery maniacs,

I don’t enjoy singing

this trio, fatal and valuable.

I will tell the secret to you,

to you, only to you.

Come closer. This song

is a cry for help: Help me!

Only you, only you can,

you are unique

at last. Alas

it is a boring song

but it works every time.
