Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation shows some benefit in Schizophrenia: trial

Seen in the Twitter feed of Chris Aiken, MD:

TMS improved social cognition and negative symptoms in this new large randomized trial of schizophrenia (delivered as intermittent theta burst stimulation)

# Effectiveness of accelerated intermittent theta burst stimulation for social cognition and negative symptoms among individuals with schizophrenia: A randomized controlled trial

Highlights

• This is the first randomized, double-blind, and sham-controlled trial to simultaneously focus on the use of accelerated iTBS for social cognition and negative symptoms among individuals with schizophrenia.

• Accelerated iTBS can effectively ameliorate the social cognition and negative symptoms of individuals with schizophrenia.

• The Accelerated iTBS may be a safe and well-tolerated neuromodulation technology to individuals with schizophrenia, and has a good clinical application prospect.

I’ve done rTMS twice. My former pdoc kept pushing it. Didn’t help. Just side-effects.

I didn’t like it so maybe I’m biased.

I never tried it (I only have depression and anxiety, no schizophrenia).
What were the side effects?

I felt like I was going to have an epileptic seizure (but didn’t) and felt dizzy all the time.

I just didn’t feel well twice and quit twice after a couple of sessions.

It wasn’t refunded by insurance and when I complained about side effects they just referred me back to my GP. Just great
