I think this 8 number is coming from a genetic model basis. Every case of schizophrenia is different if they can isolate which ones are genetically induced that still leaves a lot more to uncover about schizophrenic conditions. Some are just chemical imbalances and some I fear are hardwired into brain structure.

Here is some criticism of the research. Most of it is above my head but those more scientifically inclined might understand.
What we read is something called " lies salad" or “bundle of lies”
-they can not diagnosis single disease in the lab in any schizophrenic
before sz occurrence or during or after,so what about 8 different diseases !
-just they diagnosis the genes instead of the cause,then they give each gene
a fantastic role in creation of a specific symptom upon request !
for example,the researcher can not hear the voice,how can he knows
there is a gene produce the voice
The main idea of the research
-starting from the point that,difficulty of finding a SINGLE defective gene causes
a huge number of different symptoms “sz symptoms”
-This pushed the researchers to the presumption of the existence of a huge number
of defective genes,on the basis that each defective gene regard to the production
of a single specific symptom
-thus,the single symptom of sz classified as a single disease !!
=All there,the researchers used the word “disease” instead of word “symptom”
-This does not impart an innovative thing in the treatment of
the diseases “symptoms of sz”
Despite the plenty of what has been said or written about the schizophrenia
through more hundred of years,But the current status of the medical knowledge
about sz is still lagging behind !
This knowledge do not exceed the knowledge of doctor in the middle ages
about the bacterial diseases before the invention of the optical microscope !
Simply,the doctor of middle ages,what he know about the genetic diseases
or the bacterial infection before the invention of the microscope ?
In other words,until now the current generation of doctors does not have
the appropriate tools,which help the researchers to SEE the body of SZ cause !
The current researchers is convinced that,there are some defective genes causing
the Sz,while the actual cause is not a gene and still unknown,invisible and inaudible !
And then,we must be patient for many years on the results of the scientific research
-SOONER or LATER
the researchers will reach to the futility of belief in the gene as a cause of Sz
The researcher will make sure that ,there is another cause for sz,a hidden cause that
characterized by new existential features and functional properties that radically
different from what is known about human genes !
So that,let them look,write and say about the defective genes as they wish !
=If the doctor of middle ages {before the invention of microscope} assuming
the existence of microscopic organism “virus/bacteria …etc” causing many
diseases,it was possible for the current generation of scientists to assuming
the existence of a psychological organism causing the schizophrenia !!
this is the higher truth,and you can make sure that ,there is no any tools in
the lab have the ability to diagnosis the cause of sz in the biological
structure of any schizophrenic individual
the cause of sz is higher than the human gene,something different ,and
we have not the tools to diagnosis the cause of sz !
the cause of sz have the ability to produce the voices,and you have
not the tools to listen to this voice or diagnosis its contents !

If biological psychiatry designed the classification,division and definition
of symptoms by wrong way
-How can there be real results of such research
they do not have knowledgeable of what hallucination is for all other symptoms
-hallucination is the root origin of sz" the whole case" and all symptoms
BUT,hallucination has been placed by psychiatrists in the basket of symptoms,
while in the pure nature the things that so-called hallucination is the cause of all symptoms !
Thus,if there must be an examination to the genes,must be focused measures to
find the gene that produce the hallucination only,without the rest of other symptoms
In sum,there is no any defective gene produce the delusion or illusion or paranoid randomly,because the information that has constituted in the mind are coming
as a result of hallucination impact over the inputs and outputs information of mind
BUT the question: what is hallucination as it as in herself ??
It is a WHOLE psychological entity but it is not human in nature
,have a consciousness state,it is similar to the thing that you call “my self”
it is a conscious state including the feeling,mind and exist in the area of human attention
IT is a second consciousness state that living within the consciousness state of the schizophrenic,but it is not human
