Recession ? Yes or No?

Things are really slowing down here business wise, price for scrap is dropping big time, which is normally the first sign of troubled times. Lots of companies closing down here and jobs lost.

Whats it like in your area?

hard to say. Interest rates way down over here. Lots of jobs going to contract/casual so the full time jobs have been disappearing for a long time. So. No inflation to speak of but all it takes is a stock market fall and the world is in pain.

AFAIK things are going pretty well.

I’ve been cancelling policies all over the place, no work. The idiot in Ottawa has severely damaged the economy in our region.

Being in the UK it’s worrying with the prospect of leaving the EU without a deal. We will be properly screwed if that happens. We are already showing signs of recession here because of the Brexit uncertainty.

Two recessions in a decade would really suck.

You mean Trudeau? What did he do? I used to think he is highly educated and competent.

Hopefully, it’s mild. Recessions seem common in capitalism every once in a while. Not sure who to blame it on this time.

You mean the guy all over the news for wearing “brown face” years ago?

Dunno man. In my country we don’t quite follow Canadian policies closely. I just heard from different people that he’s good. Now those people might of course be biased or misinformed. That’s why I asked @shutterbug for clarification.

Don’t want to get sucked into political discussions here. Yes, my part of the country is suffering fiscally, that’s demonstrable

I think the US is still in a recession. They say our economy is great and that unemployment is at historic lows, but there are a TON of part time, no benefits jobs out there.

The poverty line is around $25,000. There are still about 13-15 % of the population that are under the poverty line and nearly a third are flirting with poverty. 15% of the population is about 49 million people. That’s bananas.

They also don’t count people not looking for work anymore in the unemployment number. I learned that in economics 101. Unemployment number is probably a lot higher than we realize. My mom works a job with low pay, part time, and no benefits. She’s grateful she has a job because it’s her first real one in 20+ years, but they should give her part medical or retirement when she’s working 30+ hours a week sometimes. Maybe they will in the future though.

My sister works her ass off in construction and makes almost $100k a year. It’s doable for some, but not me. Not since the schizophrenia hit.

I live in California and you need to make like $100k a year to raise a family here. In LA it’s probably a lot higher.

Technically, we are not in a recession, but we might be in the future.

My partner works her butt off pretty much wiping butts at a nursing home all night 8 to 16 hour shifts sometimes. It’s hard out there.
