Pleasant surprise

One of my neighbours nagged me into entering some of my photos into a contest on nextdoor.ca - it’s a social media app where people are grouped by community. Here’s one of the images I entered:

Imgur

I logged in for the first time in two weeks and found this:

My image made it into the final four for the grand prize. The voting has been running for the last five days and it ends at midnight tonight. I’ve got over half of the votes and it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that I’m taking the grand prize. $500 AirBnB voucher and a $50 Popsa voucher.

Today sucked so this was a nice thing to bump into.

Nice man! You deserve it - the photos you post here look like they should be in magazines!

You live in a very scenic place. Very jealous!

I hope you get a nice trip out of it.

Oh man, uh, yeah. Here’s the park where I took about half of this year’s photos:

I looped around it with my drone. You’ll recognize the bridge from the photo at the top of this post. It’s actually rather flat and empty.

That’s a great photo!

What’s the range on the drone?

Theoretically 10km line of sight and 2km elevation (highly illegal since the legislated flight ceiling is 120m). You’re not supposed to fly a drone out of your sight, which I’ve done since I’ve gone just over 2km away. I generally try to obey the rules for distance and always for elevation. This trip is just a hair over a kilometre away:

I was being extremely careful between the buildings in case I lost signal with structure between myself and the aircraft. The drone will return to home after 30 seconds of losing contact with the controller. It climbs straight up to 30m and then flies directly to the GPS location it launched from. I didn’t want it to go straight up into the underside of a roof.

That’s incredible progress in technology

I had no idea it had got to those sorts of levels!

:exploding_head:

I remember being ten years old watching Star Trek and wishing I had something as cool as Kirk’s communicator. My mobile phone I have now is waaaaaaay cooler. And who imagined we’d have remotely controlled flying cameras?!? I have really enjoyed the progression of technology over the years.

Hah. Found it. This is the drone flight the top image came from:

I’m honestly not a wonderful pilot, but I’m getting photos I like from the drone so that’s what matters to me. You can see that my home is less than half a block away from the irrigation canal I walk along and about 2.5 blocks from Tom Sadler Bridge. I spend most of my lunch hours walking around there.

Update: I offically won. Press release came out yesterday and made the rounds of social media. Local media outlet found it and tracked me down this morning. I’m now featured on their site and on the local country station. My phone has been dinging non-stop all day. Also have a bunch of people wanting to buy prints and I haven’t finished setting up Zenfolio yet.

I always knew you’d become rich and famous.

For this reason I’ve always stayed on your good side for when I need money.
