A Pennsylvania photographer has turned his experiences of a nearly lifelong battle with schizophrenia into a series of pictures he hopes will inspire others and challenge misconceptions people have about the mental disorder.
Yospie Cardoso said he was first diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was just a child — after he startled family members with abnormal behaviors and voicing his suicidal thoughts.
“When you have a 7-year-old who says ‘I’m gonna kill myself because the voices in my head tell me to’ — it is kind of traumatic,” Cardoso told the Daily News.
