New Study: Delayed effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on negative symptoms of schizophrenia

Conclusion:

Negative symptoms were assessed with the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) at baseline, 4 weeks and 8 weeks. At 4 weeks, there was no difference in SANS scores between 2 groups. By 8 weeks, patients with active rTMS had significantly reduced SANS score than controls. Our findings suggest a delayed effect of rTMS on negative symptoms.

"The therapeutic effect of rTMS on negative symptoms may well persist after 8 weeks, which is beyond our observation."
It would be interesting to find out what happened to subjects exposed to rTMS beyond the 8 weeks of medical surveillance. How long does the effect last? Given that rTMS tend to be an expensive procedure, if results are not stable over time then it’s not really worth it.

I’m in a study for rTMS starting end of this month. It’s double blind so I have no idea if I will get the real treatment. If I will, I will notice and update.
