I take antipsychotics since 15 years and I have no problems of tardive diskynesia for the moment.

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a condition characterized by involuntary, repetitive body movements43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054. Several risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing TD, including:
- Long-term use of antipsychotic medications: These drugs are often used to treat conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054. Older antipsychotics (first-generation) are particularly associated with TD43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054.
- Age: People over the age of 50 are at higher risk43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054.
- Gender: Women, especially those who are post-menopausal, are more susceptible43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054.
- Ethnicity: African Americans may have a higher risk43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054.
- Substance abuse: Alcohol and tobacco use can increase the risk43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054.
- Other medications: Certain drugs used to treat stomach ailments, such as metoclopramide and prochlorperazine, can also cause TD43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054.
- Medical conditions: Having conditions like diabetes, brain injuries, or dementia can elevate the risk43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054.
It’s important to discuss these risk factors with a healthcare provider, especially if you’re taking medications that could contribute to TD. They can help monitor and manage your treatment to minimize the risk.
