Is alcohol worse than cigarettes?

Temptations for me is too much… And I have a lot of enables.

I would say that addiction to alcohol is worse because it can totally destroy lives.

Smoking will shorten your life by maybe 10 years, but I imagine that dying from a lung disease is a horrible way to go.

Best to quit both if possible.

I used to think cigarettes until i witnessed a relative fall deep into alcoholism. Nicotine is better than something potentially intoxicating that can make sz symptoms worse

Alcohol makes you impulsive and do stoopid things cigarettes are better

In terms of moderation, if you’re able to drink in moderation, it’s probably healthier than smoking cigarettes in moderation.

Alcohol makes you intoxicated, you do and say stupid sh-it when you are under the influence. Also you shouldn’t mix meds with alcohol. There are several risks involved with being drunk.

Cigarettes fu-cks your lungs up. You can get cancer, COPD and other illnesses. Also cigarettes can cause other ailments involving the mouth such as dental loss.

Both are very bad if you are addicted.

Because Ive never witnessed someone die from cigarette withdrawal before. Withdrawal from alcohol or benzos carry a huge risk of death. Seen it many a time, in the days I worked in hospital.

Plus more people commit crime under the influence of alcohol rather than under the effects of nicotine. Again, known a whole array of crimes that were carried out while folk were intoxicated. Cant say I know any that happened after a cig was smoked.

I don’t know which impacts worse for the health, but I quit smoking start of the year and alcohol last week. No looking back now and it was done cold turkey. Guess I do have a will!

Edit: I hope you can too

I wonder whether your days working in a hospital gave you some idea about which of those things might be worse for liver health.

Damaging to the liver? Both! But with that said, I never had to sit on a 1:1 with a patient who was withdrawing from cigarettes before. Or any sort of narcotic. Benzos, yes. Plus never experienced violence from someone as a consequence of having a smoke.

Yeah, alcohol and violence seem to have an ancient history. A gentleman from Lagos explained to me and another person that ancient warriors used some alcoholic drinks to help them fight.

Of course. Dutch courage!

Its interesting the fine line between “methodic use” versus “addiction”. Ie: in the Vietnam War, they reckon 85% of GI soldiers experimented quite heavily with opiates. Only a few went on to become addicts, even though we all know how awfully poisonous opiates can be.

I’m currently taking a course on addiction. There is a lot more about alcohol than there is on cigarette smoking and vaping. Alcohol is, in my opinion, worse because of the risks it brings like anger issues (poor judgement) or car accidents. Both are awful for you, though.
