I want to stop taking my meds

I’ve had some ■■■■ come up and it’s making me really want to stop taking my meds.

I know this sounds very SZ cliche

I want to know what to expect if I suddenly stopped taking my medication.

I’m on 37.5 mg of risperidone injection.

Sorry guys.

Well, I would advise to talk to your pdoc and see if you could lower the dose or even see if you guys could find a way to taper off your meds to a point where you are med free. But don’t go off them cold turkey.

I went off my meds completely over the summer. The first week was a honeymoon period. I felt like I was on top of the world, and I felt like being med free was the best choice I ever made in my life. After that week my life slowly became hell. The paranoia and hallucinations made me stay in my room for most hours of the day. I only slept for about 3 hours for every two days. My thoughts and speech became extremely disorganized that I couldn’t hold a conversation with people around me. After a month I had a catatonic episode that had to have my parents involuntarily hospitalize me to get me re-stabilized on my medication.

I’m not saying this will happen to you because everyone’s experiences are completely different with this illness. But the moral is that going cold turkey is not a good idea. We’re on these medications for a reason, and there will be consequences for going off of them completely. Talk with a doctor and see what they can do about lowering them, most doctors are pretty understanding about it. Sorry if this isn’t the response you wanted, but I’m just being realistic.

I have some experience in stopping medications. It has never worked for me. At the assisted living center where I live I have seen others go off their med’s, and it has never worked for them. I still want to quit my medications at times. If you feel like you have to go off your med’s maybe you could do it under a doctor’s surpervision. I can identify with your desire to get off the med’s, but I would think long and hard before you did it.

Cheers guys. Really appreciate the replies. I’ll stay on them.

My answer is a little late but going off ofyour meds is the biggest cause of relapse and you risk being hospitalized and you DO NOT want to go those places.
