I need a treat

If it helps, don’t pay retail. We buy large chunks of meat at a store that sells in bulk and then we portion and freeze them ourselves. If you pay for pre-cut chops they’re about $5 apiece at our local grocery outlet (thieving buggers). Buy cutting my own I only pay about $1.10/chop. The Brussels come frozen in a large bag – not expensive. The sweet potatoes were on the edge of spoiling and 50% off. Bought them, cooked them right away, and froze them.

unfortunately I wouldn’t have a clue where to find bulk chunks of meat. thank you though now that solves one mystery about how you do it.

What you need to find are stores that sell to small restauranteurs, but who are also open to the public. They tend to sell stuff in bulk for a lot less than what you’d pay in a normal grocery store. In my area, the one to go to is “The Real Canadian Wholesale Club” or as it is being re-branded, “The Wholesale Club”. It’s part of the Loblaws Group here in Canada. I’m sure there is something similar near where you live.

Since you can’t eat an entire flat of canned goods, the other part of the strategy is to form a shopping club. You plan ahead, go together, and then carefully split up the goods after. I’m able to keep a grocery bill for a family of three under $800/mth Canadian, and that’s with fruit and meat in the diet.

When you see loaves of bread or veggies on sale for 50% off, grab those suckers. Freeze the bread and pull out immediately before using, it will still last long enough for that. Take the veggies and immediately prep and freeze them. Use them for soups!

Finally, whenever possible, do not eat out. I really mean it: DO NOT EAT OUT. I can spend $35 on a chicken meal for 3 people that will feed us once. That same $35 buys a massive pork loin, a bag of potatoes, and bag of frozen Brussel sprouts at Wholesale Club. We can eat for five days off of that. Wouldn’t you rather have five days of good food than one crappy bucket of chicken?

Not meaning to criticize, just hoping to offer some inspiration on eating better for less.

the things is @shutterbug is that I don’t like to fry chicken so it is worth the @12 to get a bucket of chicken when I have a coupon…we have no where near $800 and live on frozen food like taquitos and pizza rolls…this pay day though I am making jambalaya…it’s been too long !!

$800 in Canadian groceries is equivalent to $400 (or less) of American groceries. Keep in mind that we have taxes buried in the price of everything up north. Gotta pay for that “free” health care somehow.

It seems that you have a lot to improve on in terms of healthy nutrition.
My life is worth more than mountains of gold,
and I eat only healthy food, like bread rolls from whole wheat with whole tahini or almond paste.
And the whole tahini and almond paste are such that it is certified on the labeling that they contain
a variety of vitamins and minerals, and they have high protein content.

we have approx. $225 for food each month…

OMG. That’s horrible. :frowning:

see, I told you!

Are you making what you can, at least? A flour tortilla is dead simple to make and dirt cheap, too. I also like making my own pitas from scratch.

I get my gyro pitas in Arby’s dude…no way would I have the patience to make my own…until Angie gets her disability I have to support her and the two dogs…poor poor poor.

Man, it would blow your mind to realize how simple pitas are to make! Try this recipe and follow the video:

Sooooo good and inexpensive!!!

Dollar banquet pot pies. Frozen and small serving but always enough to fill me up.
