So my dad and stepmom recently told me I should get my own apartment because when they die I won’t be able to afford the maintenance to my dad’s old house that he wanted to give to me when he died. I want to move into these apartments downtown that only take 30% of your income because I like the downtown area and I’d only be five blocks away from my dad’s house and can come dog sit every day. There’s a few things I need to do before this can happen so it might take a few months but I hope it all works out.

I used to live on my own but seem to like it these days better to be surrounded by family.

I think I’ll like it. I lived in university apartments for about two months one summer in 2011 when I was 21 and taking a summer school class and I liked it. I also lived in a motel for a week in 2012 but the room stunk so I moved back in with my dad.

If you have never lived on your own for a long period of time it will be a big shift.

You’ll have to get used to a lot of little things like putting out the trash, doing the grocery shopping, fixing things, cleaning, dealing with the landlord and neighbors,…
It’s doable but it requires energy.
Just giving you the heads up.
You might like the privacy though.

I’m ok with doing all of those things. I’m working on trying to be more independent. Really the only problem I’ll have is not having a car to go see my doctor but I might be going to another mental health team who might be able to give me rides to my doctor’s appointments.
