I have to travel for a mammogram and I’m afraid we’re going to wreck on the highway and I’m going to die. I really want to call it off. Take my chances on the breast cancer.
What is it about the mammogram that’s got you feeling fearful?
Ive never had one but I think they might be painful, and no one wants to receive possibly bad news. But what do you think about them?
I’m fine with the mammogram, it’s the highway driving that scares me. I have a phobia of going over about 25 miles per hour or so. I freak out and want to jump out of the car.
Oh, so car journeys then. I’m with you on that. I don’t like cars.
But I don’t mind train and bus.
I know the highway driving is a frequent stressor for you. If you’re not driving, can you take your PRN? Or just stay with us via your phone and write out your worries during the trip?
I am having a medical transport (expert driver) take me. I am taking 2 mg Ativan there and 2 mg Ativan on the way home. I’m still scared I’m going to die. I mean what if a big rig tips over on us? What if someone gets on their phone a swerves into our lane? I’m truly terrified of these stupid drivers out here. But on the other hand it’s been over 3 years since I’ve had a mammogram, since they had the mobile clinic come through.
I don’t know, I don’t know. I really have to calm down. I need some tea or something.
Can you text the crisis line? They help me with grounding exercises.
You can always ask the driver to turn around if you can’t handle it. Just make up an excuse.
You’ll be fine. Hopefully the atvian will help you calm down.
Have you ever tried the 4-7-8 breath? The instructions can be found with Google.
