Hypo/Mania…?

Hello peeps,

Been up since 2am and have a huge urge to clean out my bedroom closet.

…It feels like one huge electric itch that I just gotta scratch at 5 in the morning.

Could this be a start of Hypo/mania?

I can’t afford another manic episode— quite literally, as I’m still recovering financially from the last one. Not to mention the number it does on my relationships and my own mental health.

I need a mood stabilizer or something to avoid these peaks I’m flying above right now, but my pdoc has kinda left me high and dry till January— I’m not an easy patient because I refuse a lot of meds. Not trying to be difficult— just trying to advocate for myself after a huge Zyprexa/Risperdone/Geodon debacle years ago that failed me miserably.

Having energy and motivation feels pretty good, but I know that shiit storm’s a’ brewin’.

:poop: :cloud_with_lightning_and_rain:

Does anybody here with SZA/Bipolar have any tell-tale signs of heading into a manic or depressive episode? Curious to know what those might be, since I’m pretty newly-diagnosed as Bipolar-type so I dunno all the warning signs yet .

Anywho, thanks and hope you all are doing well :dizzy:

I don’t have mania.

But I would hand over those credit cards to some family members for the time being.

If you go in mania, you will know. That is the case with me. There are no signs before going in mania for me. But, you could see the symptoms, such as, racing thoughts or flight of ideas, higher sex drive, full of energy, etc, etc…hypomania is a little more difficult to tell, but those symptoms are in a lesser intensity.

But, everyone’s experience is slightly different. If you have had hypomania before, have you reacted in this manner? That you clean a lot? Because that doesn’t in itself sound like hypomania, but since you can’t sleep, it may be.

Earlier in my life I had a manic episode, and I also spent all my money. You got to be careful there, don’t go broke like I did.

Yyyea, I’m not really a cleaning type of person . And sorry you had a rough episode and spent all your money— I can relate all too well, sadly.

Thank you for your reply @angledangle :+1:

My first signs are usually that things seem more fun and colors are more vivid and my thoughts go into lightspeed mode I also start socializing more, during my first manic episode I started having dream like vivid visions. It may be imposter syndrome but now i’m doubting if i’m even bipolar/sza since I haven’t had any episodes lately.

Actually, I had a very good time spending all the money.

I was in Columbia university, and I had taken loans. I spent all that money in three nights. Best time I had since the symptoms began. It was free money basically because the loans were subsequently forgiven. I had the time of my life and I still cherish those memories. Haha the last time I had a manic episode, it was kinda long, and I ended up in a different country. But, because of covid couldn’t enjoy the time thoroughly. lol.

I have schizoaffective bipolar type. From what you described, it does sound like you could be heading into hypomania or full -blown mania.

Could you give your credit/debit cards to a friend or family member? Or a partner, if you’re dating someone whom you trust.? Try to make it impossible to spend money.

But that’s more difficult in this techy world we live in. As cards are often linked to online stores, like Amazon, or really any online store that you’ve previously bought from, which often save your card details.

Actually, I just thought of something. Can you freeze your cards? And then if you REALLY need to buy something, talk to someone who can understand the need and also understand when to say no. And if they agree you need to purchase something, they lend you a bit of money.

Once the manic episode is over, your cards can be unfrozen, and you could then pay that person back (which hopefully won’t be much).

My tell tale sign of mania is higher energy and flight of ideas.
Like suddenly im going to become a famous rap music artist but i cant even sing, or im going to start a a cartoon network but i have 0 drawing skills.
And i kid you not the ideas come like a million miles an hour, i could just type pages and pages of stuff.

Then i have the urge to go out and buy all the equipment needed for this stuff.

Then one day it ends (could be days or weeks or months) and im like ok wtf was going on?!?!

Then crumple mode lol

Ive gotten better at dealing with it. I try to sit on all big ideas for atleast 3 weeks before revisiting it. (Doesnt always work)

If it becomes dysphoric and agitated mania then ill take risperidone as a prn to slow me down

My mania is tied to my sex drive. When I start wanting to hookup with randos I know I need to rethink. Luckily my paranoia then kicks in and keeps me from inviting people over. Cause when I’m baseline my sex drive is low. So far haven’t invited anyone over and haven’t had sex in two years. But I’m on depakote now.

I’ve never become manic but I get hypomania on occasion. Telltale signs are elevated energy, whether irritable or euphoric, and voices more and can’t stop talking or laughing or singing and act silly and struggle to sleep. Sometimes I clean extra too. I ve never overspent due to mania, I think it’s because mine is mild and only lasts a few days.

I have sza bipolar type

Sounds just like my hypomania - it only lasts a few hours to about two or three days. I get goofy too.

I have mania from time to time but little insight when I’m all excited about something. It usually lasts 1 to 2 weeks. I only realize it when it’s over and I realize how big a fool I’ve been.
