Do you think Hip Hop music (for those that listen to it) are exploiting mental illness to make money? Not even including the amount of times I’ve heard schizo used in songs there are a lot of themes around it.
I think hop hop music exploits the poor.
I hate hiphop now. Eminem and many others claim they’re crazy. They dunno what that means.
Not really in any of the hip hop I listen to. I think rappers claming to hear voices or that they’re psychotic are just playing on that “ooh I’m this hardcore” sort of vibe. I don’t think it’s any kind of conspiracy.
There’s a rapper from Slum Village named Baatin who got schizophrenia and died later for unknown causes. He had an amazing voice and was one of my fav rappers.
This is a pretty good article on the subject:
I would say Eminem probably knows what it means to be crazy.
some may be exploiting mental illness but not all. theres many artists that go through some form of mental illness and i feel that music is their way of coping with it. check out eyedea
Some of the lyrics seem to be insightful.
Some of the lyrics seem to exploit (and enflame) emotions.
Some of the lyrics seem to play on “learned helplessness” (see below).
Some of the lyrics seem to paint writers and listeners alike into corners.
And…
Some of the lyrics seem just plain self-indulgent.
I wouldn’t say they exploit it.
they may have first hand experienced it, or know someone that does.
you never really know…
Go listen to Capital Steez, I believe he suffered from Schizophrenia.
His lyrics reflect a lot what I went through during my episodes
he ended up committing suicide
a lot of people think the constant marijuana smoking drove him insane & made his sz worse
have you ever heard of eyedea?
If marijuana made him paranoid, that sounds definitely plausible.
I have this pet theory that if one is paranoid smoking marijuana and they smoke all the time their mental state becomes paranoid. You think in paranoid ways all the time and even when you don’t smoke it, you are still paranoid because you are used to it
Yeah man Eyedea is dope! I think he also falls in that Legendary category of overlooked emcees. Their lyrics are so abstract that they go over peoples heads. You have to be a really analytical person to listen to their music.
Immortal Tech, Eyedea, Steez, Aesop, Mf DOOM, Pharoahe Monch, Killah Priest
Yeah thats what really drew me in to his music.
I went through the same thing, constant smoker. Smoking definitely made my psychosis 10x worse
Me too actually
eyedeas music has helped me out a lot. even shadows have shadows
Nice some people listen to hip hop. Yea ive listened to a lot of that and it makes me wonder if its a money thing or can rappers relate to us? Cause insanity and sz is a theme in hip hop a lot. Thanks for the link too
