When I first got ill at 19 my parents arranged for me to be in a support group. After the group, one of the therapist leaders stopped to talk to me. She asked how I was getting home. I told her by bus. She exclaimed, “Oh, you’re high functioning.” I hadn’t heard the expression before but I knew what it meant but I was amazed because I didn’t think twice about taking a bus anywhere.

37 years later, two days ago I took a taxi to downtown at 6:00am. Then I caught the light rail transit system across two cities for an hour, and my mechanic met me with my car when I got off.that he had fixed. I dropped him off at his shop, drove to work and then drove home afterward through heavy traffic for an hour on the freeway.

Recovery takes a lot of work,
A lot of help,
And most importantly, a lot of luck.

I think it varies. I can pay my rent on time, own a truck, and grocery shop, living on my own, but a month ago I threw out all of my food cuz it “was poisoned” and just took my first shower since I got out of hospital a week ago. My shrink wanted to put me in a group home last month but I still managed to get my Master’s degree 10 years ago. I keep my apartment spotless but don’t really care when I keep myself spotless and I can discuss organic chemistry with someone while wondering how they’re related to the people talking to me thru the TV.

I can work and take classes. That’s considered high functioning for my illness. However I am barely capable of taking care of myself and basically fall into squalor if I live alone. I’m living with my parents right now.

I cant work, but all my doctors say im high functioning. I just get overwhelmed w/anxiety among other things

Hi @freefee. Typically, we like to leave inactive threads alone and just start a new thread instead. This is different than how some forums are run, but we do it this way because it frequently upsets users to have old topics revived when they are no longer relevant. It can also be frustrating to the person who revived the thread when they don’t get a reply, because the original poster is no longer active or no longer finds the topic relevant. Feel free to start a new thread on this topic.

Thanks,
