why is it customary to do spring cleaning? why the spring instead of another season? dad says because it warms up and you can open a window and get fresh air in your place.

Yes. During winter due to cold weather windows stay mostly closed.

Like the flowers in Spring they begin to grow afresh. The snow melts and life becomes anew. It is a metaphor for rejuvenation. 
Clean out the old dirt and start again.

I think in the middle ages it would be when you threw out the rushes/floor coverings and clean up after winter. I’d imagine it was a pretty bleak time for a lot of people and thus the spring cleaning.
