Glasgow Uni makes breakthrough in treatment for schizophrenia

Thanks, that’s great. Even though this is just one gene, perhaps this peptide is also affected by other genes, or they will be able to apply the principal to other genes. Very innovative.

I think that this should be tested on unmedicated as well as medicated patients and quickly!!!

I want to bump this thread because cures and treatments count!!!

Articles about niche things like this are usually less sensationalistic. Remember, sz only effects 2% of the world’s population. We’re rare. And I’m hopeful about this discovery.

@Lexicon this is not rare!!!
There are a lot of schizophrenics!!
Rare is something that affects say 0.05% of the population, that’s rare.
And by the way even rare stuff should be treated!!!
Nobody should be left behind!!!

It sounds like this is with brain organoids, not in people or lab animals. So literally, in a petri dish. It will be a long time before it is applied to people, however that might be, either as a gene therapy or with a drug to increase this brain peptide. But it’s still unquestionably a major breakthrough.

@twinklestars what is important is for the issue to be resolved,
so long as there is progress I am happy, I don’t care whether I will be alive or dead then.

It seems that this has been known in mice since 2004. Still a breakthrough though, major one I’d say.

Well, I care, I want to be alive, however I want to see progress either way, even if it is only for future generations.

I do think we will see a cure in most of our lifetimes, or close enough to one that it doesn’t matter. Just saying that it would be incredible to even see this begin a limited human trial in 5 years. It’s that translation from the lab to the hospital that is difficult and time consuming.

@twinklestars I would rather be alive,
I would rather see quick progress.
I support quick progress of mankind, and it seems to be taking place.
Throughout history there were no treatments for schizophrenia.
In the past decades there has been some progress with the appearance of certain
medications, which give a certain level of improvement for many patients,
and the next step may be better medications or even a cure.
And the sooner, the better many people suffer from this condition through no fault of their own.

Posted by @Green in a different thread. It’s apparently the same research, but this article contains some additional information.
