Evil Knievel. A dark musing TW

Stumbled on video of Evil Knievel on YouTube making a motorcycle jump-and wrecking.
And it made me think. With all this reality television and YouTube you can see all kinds of terrible things nowadays. But terrible things that are horrible. Haven’t we all watched at least one video of something like a cop having a real shootout? Or a car wreck, or a street fight, or an animal attacking someone? I’m not promoting violence but now you can see a jail fight or something. For people my age (60), the only thing around during the seventies was Evil Knievel. His failed jumps were epic, you didn’t see anything else on TV like them.
I’m not saying seeing a wreck or a fight is good but we all have that curiosity. That little impulse when we stumble on a video of something dark. It’s like rubber-necking a wreck on a freeway. Or when the best part of the baseball game is a bench clearing brawl. Now you can see anything. But back in the seventies, Evil Knievel was the only thing like that around. I don’t want to see anyone get hurt but when you watched his motorcycle jumps in the back of your mind you were thinking you might get to see a wreck.

I watched a Jihadi video of a British Journalist having his head cut off

Make me feel terrible

When the saw knife hit his throat the screaming stopped

I was too afraid to watch Shatner’s recent launch into space in real time. I’m too fond of the guy to risk seeing him getting blown to pieces on live tv.

I avoid this sort of content. It feeds a part of me that no one ever needs to see or hear from ever again. Better to pick up a camera and go search for pictures or have a cuppa and pet the kitty instead.
